Thank you SuzyQ for the information. We would like to add some additional information. Your phone is a global device and does require a SIM card if using the phone outside of the US. Your SIM card holds the phone number, phone settings, a personal security key, plus other data necessary for the phone to function on GSM networks. It does not hold your contacts, so you would need to download Backup Assistant to backup your contacts.
Thank you

Blackberry Desktop Manager will work between Blackberry phones, but won't work if your next phone is a Droid or other smartphone.
Not all Verizon phones will use a SIM card - or did you mean the SD card? The SD card is normally formatted for each phone, so the info would need to be transferred to a computer, then the card reformatted for the new phone, then the info transferred back to the card.
Using Outlook or Google to store contacts may be the "best" solution when swapping between the various models of smartphones . . .
