Blackberry Storm and inability to sync to laptop

I have a new blackberry storm and am having a great deal of difficulty in getting it to sync to my outlook on my laptop. I have downloaded and removed then downloaded the software repeatedly as directed by tech support and still when I try to do a sync between the two devices, I get all the way through and then an error message.... blackberry desktop manager has stopped working...
no data is transferred to my phone or to outlook on my laptop.... has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, how did you resolve it....
