So far it behaves much better. The best improvement is the select function (cut, copy) - it is a 1000X better than the .75 method. It now uses a large square box to select as you drag your finger.
Other items I have noticed is the Web seems easier to use (might just be me getting used to the phone) and faster. I have not had any reboots yet, but it is early - they only happened once in a while for me on .75. The camera is much better behaved (quicker, cleaner).
I only had two issues with the upgrade. The one contact group I had lost some of it's people, and my calendar appointments were lost. I tried bringing the contact group back with the contacts part of the backup, but it did not work - had to re-add the missing members. The calendar items I fixed by going back to the backup and bringing them over.

I went from official .75 to official .148. Not as buggy and camera is a little faster. Biggest issue for my wife and I ( both have storms and upgraded OTA) Battery life not as good as .75. That is a huge disappointment. We are both fairly light users also, very frustrated after waiting this long for the "official" upgrade and now batt life worse than ever!

Wife and I upgrade and had some initial problems, but pulling the battery out and popping it back in solved all our issues. Only thing I couldn't fix was the trial period for Word to Go was cut short and I can't reactivate... and I don't want to buy it.
The touchscreen seemed more responsive from the get go and the browser felt overall faster, so I'm pretty pleased.

How do you get this upgrade?
Any word on when Verizon will officially announce something?

VZW already released it... Hook your device up to your pc and the desktop manager software, it should prompt you, if not, select check for updates.
You can also do this through your phone under the options menu, and also on blackberry.com or even crackberry.com

Is the upgrade pretty painless? I am on the road in Asia this week and a little reluctant to make a change, but I might do it anyway. Living on the edge I guess.

Not a good upgrade.
Before you upgrade, make sure you synch with your computer so you have all the appointments and contacts that you've added on the road. It's not clear to me that everything is back. I had to reset all the passwords for apps like facebook mobile and twitterberry.
My browswer disappeared. Not that I use it that much but it was there when I bought the phone so it should be there now.
I haven't noticed an improvement to the Blackberry since the upgrade.
