Gmail email read on computer , still shows up as Unread on the Blackberry Pearl

Hi, a friend of mine just purchased a BB Pearl and has Gmail.  He says that he set his email to automatic synchronization, but the emails still show up as unopened on the phone.  Is there a setting so that they show up as opened on the phone as well, when in fact they've already been read on the pc?
