Storm2 changes time zones frequently and randomly

pastfacesfuture

Hello all!

I've been using a BlackBerry for almost 4 years now, so I'm not new to RIM or the Verizon network by any means.  I leave my phone settings in a way that the phone will automatically adjust the time zone when I travel, which is frequently.  It has always worked.  I've had this particular phone for 1 year and 4 months, and I am on version 5.0.0.1015 (and have been for about 3 months).  I recently flew to Manhattan from my home in Florida, and forgot to turn my cellphone off during the flight.  Now, my phone displays a popup message notification every few minutes that says: "Time Zone has been updated to Atlantic Time (-4 Hours)" and immediately following it, another popup message notification that says:  "Time Zone has been updated to Eastern Time (4 Hours)".  I live in the Eastern Time Zone, and New York is in the Eastern Time Zone, and although I did have a layover in Atlanta, it TOO is in the Eastern Time Zone.

Basically, what can I do about this?  I've tried several battery pulls, I've tried turning the auto-adjust time zone feature OFF, nothing seems to kick it into gear.

Ideas?

Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure what you can do about the problem, my BB storm 2 was doing the same thing 2 wks ago, I hadn't even left the time zone I have always lived in...I was in a building where I could not get very good reception and every 2 seconds it would change from central time to mountain time and ever since then every time I hit a "dead" zone my time zone changes back and forth until I get into a spot where I get service.  I never had this problem til 2 wks ago and I've had my phone for a year this month.

I have provided below two possible solutions to this issue:  The second solution is the main fix which should have been a software update.

Work Around

You should turn the "Auto-Update Time Zone" feature to "OFF" (Go to Options>Date/Time, change Auto Update Time Zone to "Off", press the BlackBerry menu key and select "Save") and to manually change the time zone when they travel outside their home time zone (Go to Options>Date/Time, change the time zone, press the BlackBerry menu key and select "Save").

Before updating your software, please backup your files.  I have provided instructions below:

BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.x / 5.x

  1. Ensure the device is connected to the computer via the supplied USB cable.
  2. Launch BlackBerry Desktop Software.
From the Windows desktop, navigate Start > Programs (All Programs) > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager.
If not available, refer to Download / Install BlackBerry Desktop Manager for assistance.
  3. Click Backup and Restore.
  4. Click Back up.
  5. Click Save.
The Backup file will be named with the current date and saved in My Documents.
Backup is complete when the Transfer in progress window closes.

Backup Data (Advanced)

  1. Ensure the device is connected to the computer via the supplied USB cable.
  2. Launch BlackBerry Desktop Software.
From the Windows desktop, navigate Start > Programs (All Programs) > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager.
  3. Click Backup and Restore.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. From the Device databases section, select the database(s) then click the left arrows to transfer.
To select multiple databases, press and hold down the CTRL key then click the appropriate databases.
To select a range of databases, press and hold the Shift key then click the appropriate databases.
  6. Click File > Save As (located in the upper-left).
  7. Click Save.
The Backup file will be named with the current date and saved in My Documents.
  8. Click Close

Updating Software

  1. Click a device.
    Click on a device
  2. Click Features & Specs.
  3. View the current software version.
  4. 5.0.0 Release 1656 (Platform 4.2.0.442 App 5.0.0.1015)
  1. Click View Software Version.
  2. If needed, update the device firmware / software if the latest version is newer than the version currently loaded into the device.

  1. Follow the instructions to perform available system / software updates.

Why should a user of a blackberry have to turn off functionality on the device specifically put there by RIM for travelers?
