In order to update the OS on a BB Smartphone, does the version of BBDM need to be same as or higher than the OS Version on the handset?
Also, will BB Release notes specifically state what issues are addressed, or performance enhancements obtained, by updating the OS on a phone (such as multiple hard resets, unresponsive or slow touch screen, etc)

I appreciate your responses here. You guys are missing the point though? or am I? I am a new tech and learning. I support BB's (and all other phones-whether they have an OS or not), all day long.
My question was not about unauthrized SW upgrades, it was about how to update an OS using BBDM (in an authorized way, ok?)
as a possible fix vs. exchanging a device-although I don't even know if an OS upgrade (for example to the current 4.7 from something lower) would even address an issue such as slow or unresponsive touch screen.
I'm going to have to figure out how to word my questions on here so that it can be a learning experience for me (and all of us) in terms of building technical/product knowledge, as opposed to a lesson in what is authorized or not authorized, terms and conditions, etc.
I need to learn as much as possible and need to learn fast. There is SO much out there, that I've decided to focus on building strong knowledge in at least one area (like Blackberry). On the other calls I struggle (such as Palm or Windows Mobile sync questions)
