unknown screen icon

My phone has an icon I can't identify.  It's under the date and time.  There's a numeral 1 and next to that is a little white circle on top of a yellow  symbol that is a horizontal line with vertical line attached line, going towards the right at about a 45 degree angle.

I didn't have that icon for the first few days of the phone and now it's on constant.  Simultaneously, I've had less battery life since that icon showed.  

Anyone recognize my description?

My husband figured out the icon---it's a indication that there's a message from AIM.
