Backup Options

Hi All -

Just a couple of questions and general feedback, please!  I am new to BlackBerry, having had feature phones for years before making the move in May to a BB Bold.  I used Backup Assistant on all my previous devices and it worked well.

Backup Assistant is available on the BB, and I used it to transfer contacts onto my device when I activated it in May.  So far so good.... I then used (and still use) BlackBerry Desktop Manager to backup all my BB stuff (contacts, emails, messages, calendar, etc, etc, etc).  I've recently downloaded, installed, and used BlackBerry Protect to back things up.  So I apparently have a backup online with Backup Assistant (contacts only), online with BB Protect (all stuff), and locally on my laptop with BB Desktop (all stuff).  Overkill?  Do I *really* need all three?

And just to confuse things, I logged on to Backup Assistant on my laptop this morning (to answer another question elsewhere in the Community) and saw it didn't have a couple of recent changes to my contact list, so I went to the BB to do a backup, and it wanted to RESTORE.  But that would sync my list WITHOUT the new information, wouldn't it?  I backed out and didn't do anything, leaving the online BA and the BB contact list as they were (with the online BA missing some info).

A short time later (within 30 minutes, maybe less) I received a text message (first one of this type).  It was from 6200, and read: //BREW:0x01017246:TYPE:SAS;UI=1;CONT=0,1,0;  Googling led to crackberry, where this seems to be connected to Backup Assistant somehow, but I have never gotten this before, and Backup Assistant HAS synced with the Blackberry prior to this.  What's going on?

Or am I overthinking this?  Should I just go with the BB Protect, and Desktop Manager and leave BA alone?  What do all of you use for backup on your devices?

I primarily use Desktop Manager to backup settings, contacts, emails, etc and BBSAK for backing up 3rd party apps. That covers it all. Backup Assistant is good if you are switching to a different platform (as you did when you got your BB). But that is the only time I would worry about BA. That's my 2 cents worth for what it's worth. :smileyvery-happy:

OOOhhh, BBSAK - I'd forgotten about that one...downloaded it today and will explore it later, but it's a tool I want to learn how to use! I'm beginning to collect apps....
