Hi, all,
I upgraded like many of you to the latest official OS for the 9650, version 6.0.0.431. I have been experiencing random reboots, at least 4 or 5 per day. I was wondering if any of you are experiencing the same thing? Usually, random reboots are caused by some 3rd party application, but I am having a hard time figuring out which one it can be. I think it might be either Facebook or Weatherbug causing the reboot. Not sure, but wanted to get your input. If you are experiencing random reboots with this OS, let me know.

Hi, all,
I just wanted to update this thread on the status of my device since loading the latest OS 6 v 6.0.0.524 a couple of days ago. The install was flawless and my device is running smoothly. I believe the random reboots are a thing of the past.
First, if you have waited to upgrade your Bold's software, go ahead and do so. This is a very stable software release. The reboots never occurred and a breath of fresh air was breathed into my device. It runs smoothly and snappier since the upgrade. I maintain a constant 3G signal with no dropped calls. The native browser works nicely, however, I do use the latest Opera Mini Version 6 Update 1 on my Bold. I prefer the Opera Mini browser just because it loads pages faster. Other features include an updated calendar and of course the new OS 6 interface. I realize some of you may not care for the OS 6 interface and prefer the old OS 5, so to you I say, stay with what works for you. My battery drain is minimal, no more than with the last OS 5 software release. As a matter of fact, I went to work last night with a fully charged device and came home with about 75% remaining on my battery. I did not make many calls last night, but I did answer a few emails and surfed the web a bit.
In summary, I am going to mark this thread as having a solution found. I firmly believe the first OS 6 release from Verizon had a poorly written radio file, thus causing my device to lose connectivity with the network and causing the random reboots. This was resolved with the .524 OS release. I hope this thread helps some of you who had the same problems. Thanks.

I am also experiencing random reboots on my Blackberry Bold. This has occurred before and after the installation of the new OS. In my case it seems to be triggered when I activate the camera, but just today a reboot occurred when I hit the convenience key. Any information would be much appreciated. I can not see any relation to third party apps since this occurred before and after apps were loaded.

A soft reset may resolve the issues outlined on your post. To perform a soft reset on your phone please follow the instructions below:
Remove battery with phone ON. Replace battery after 10 seconds. Power phone ON. Allow phone to complete the applications registration.
Please keep in mind that Smartphones are like computers and from time to time they will stop responding due to multiple factors including the amount of applications running at the same time, the amount of media saved and the amount of memory available, and just like our computers need to be rebooted, our phones need to be rebooted from time to time.
Additionally, you can try a Hard Reset as a last option as this will bring your device to factory settings and will erase all data from it. Please make sure to back up all important information before you do a Hard Reset. You can find detailed instructions to do a Hard Reset at the link below:

I am having the same issue and for a Verizon Support rep to suggest a hard reset after reading all these messages is crazy. I am on my 4th week now of troubleshooting, my 3rd replacement phone, running no apps, at least 6 security wipes, multiple times of re-registering and re-sending service books, and still having the same issue.
My wife and I have the same phones and I upgraded both to 6.0 on the same day and that is when it started. I have been a Blackberry user for 5-6 years and never had this issue until 6.0. When they send me a replacement phone it works for 3-5 days with maybe having to do a battery pull once. Then, the gremlins come back. Not only does it do the rebooting thing, but they will stop working 3-4 times a day where you cannot make a call, or use the data for anything (web, e-mail, etc.), nor will it send or receive texts.
I have called in approximately 10 times to tech support and everyone is very nice and the bump me up to blackberry support right away. They don't have any other options than to replace your phone with something other than a blackberry. My wife has had it and now is disgusted with Blackberry. I still love them and wish they would resolve the issue. They have shipped us a Droid for my wife and I was having luck with my last replacement for about 5 days but now it is doing the same thing again. It has to be something to do with the operating system and how it reacts to the network signals it is picking up on. That is my guess. They need to get their top Blackberry Wizard (from Blackberry, not Verizon) to dring a bunch of Red Bull or whatever and get his butt to work on this problem until it is fixed.
This is costing me money in my business when I cannot receive an e-mail and respond to it ASAP. Someone, PLEASE fix this problem and let Blackberry know that they are about to lose a lot of customers.

It's not only crazy, it's flat out insulting. If we're knowledgable enough to wipe the device and install the new OS either from the DM or OTA, chances are, we've probably tried a freakin' hard/soft reset.
This issue is obviously affecting many 9650 users and it's only happening with OS6 so I'm pretty sure it isn't a hardware issue.
BUMP.

I'm having the random reboot issue as well. I've tried wiping the device and installing OS 6 from Desktop Manager. I've also tried wiping and upgrading inclemently from .975 to 6 via the OTA updates.
I've tried shrinking the OS down to just the basic OS (with no user apps except the required software) and I still get the random reboots (in other words, it happens even with no add-on apps installed).
I've tried changing the memory card and even tried it without the SIM card installed all with no luck.
The interesting thing is I've never had a random reboot with a 5.0 OS so I really don't think it's a hardware issue. They just occur with any leaked or official 6 OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am also having ramdom reboots on my brand new Bold 9650 with OS 6. The reboots first started on my Tour and they told me the device had gone bad and I needed to upgrade. I upgraded to the Bold 9650 but the first one had the 5.0 latest version on it. That phone rebooted as well. After doing a wipe and starting from scratch the phone still kept rebooting so I took it back to Verizon and they gave me a new Bold but this one had the OS 6 and this one is also doing the same thing. At this point I really can't believe that all three phones were bad so I know it has to be some kind of glitch but my reboots happen whether i'm using the phone or not. They happen a lot while I'm using the trackpad. They had told me that my memory card might be the problem with my first Bold so I did not put it into my new Bold with the OS 6 and it didn't matter because the phone was rebooting anyway so I knew it was not my memory card. I did not load any applications to the OS 6 Bold and STILL the phone reboots. I really like the Bold and the company I work for has the Enterprise Server so I want to stay with a BlackBerry but at this point the reboots are just too annoying. I am hoping that someone out there has found what may be causing the problem. I hope to hear from someone soon.

Hi, Misty,
I totally agree with you. I did not have the rebooting problem until I upgraded my device's software. I finally downgraded to OS 5.0.0.975 and my Bold runs great. No reboots or any other problems. I know everyone upgraded mainly for the better Blackberry web browser with OS 6, but it was not worth it for me. I did find a suitable alternative for a web browser. Opera Mini version 6 was just released and it is great. It features tabbed browsing and more. Check it out at Opera.com.

Hi Doc,
Thanks for your reply. I considered getting away from Blackberry because of these issues but I talked to several people at my job today, they both have the Droid and are having the same issues. They both have the same carrier I have so I'm wondering if it's actually a software problem or the carrier. I'll do an update if I find out anything else. I'll check out the Opera.com. Thanks again.

Hi, all,
I just resurrected this thread since there has been a software update for the Bold. The latest OS is now 6.0.0.524, released just today. I have not loaded this software update as of yet, since I will not have time until the weekend. I am just wondering if the problem of the random rebooting was solved with this update. If any of you Bold owners load the update will report on any issues, especially if you get random reboots, please let us know here. As of now I am running the OS 5 release on my phone with no problems. I am just curious if this latest update solves the problem of reboots.

I'll be activating my BB next week and getting it all configured and set for a working vacation in June, and I'm content to leave 5.0.0.975 in place, unless the new release is worth trying. I just don't want to be stuck with a brick; internet access for my laptop will be infrequent and I will be dependent on the BB for email and internet.
I'll be watching for your review and impressions of the new release....

Hey, Suzy,
I totally understand, and to tell the truth, I'm a little "gun-shy" myself at trying the update. However, I am going to try to update to the new OS and see if it works well enough. I will not have time to upgrade until this Friday, as I am working the next two nights. I will upgrade Friday, and post my results here in this thread. Later...

I had all the same problems, did everything I could think of and Verizon could think of. I finally rolled back to OS 5. I had not a single issue, then I saw that someone posted that with the new OS 6 just released that it would fix the random reboots. I have done it and it doesn't fix it. I will be doing another roll back tonight. And in Sept when I am due for a upgrade I will be going to Droid. Personally, i love my BB, however I feel that RIM may be trying a little to hard to keep up with Android and iphone and in the long run screwing BB users over.

Hey,
I decided to go ahead and install the latest OS 6 for the Bold, v 6.0.0.524. I downloaded the software file from the Blackberry software download page and installed that file on my computer. Then, I loaded Blackberry Desktop Software (BDS) on my PC and backed up my device data. After backing up, I then updated my software on my Bold through the BDS. I have to admit, the install went fast for me, about 30 minutes. I decided to load the software to see specifically if I was going to get the same random reboots as I did with the previous OS 6 software. So far, so good. The radio signal is steady at 5 bars and strength is at -80 db. All of my old 3rd party apps were loaded automatically in the upgrade. Also, all of my contacts, calendar events, and saved messages were ported over to the new software upgrade. I will keep a watch on my device tonight since I will be working all night and report back in the morning on any random reboots. Fingers crossed...

Just couldn't wait till Friday, eh Doc? I know you'll keep us posted on how your Bold reacts to the new OS.
Do you recommend upgrading through BDS? Does it matter what version of the BDS you have? Or should that be the most recent? When I try to load it up it says my BDS needs upgrading to 6.0.2.44 (Bundle 45).
William - I'd be interested in comparing your experience and Doc's - though I likely won't be upgrading to 6 until after I return from NY.

What I will say for this build of OS 6 is that it is marginally better than the one AT&T and other carriers certified on the 9700 Bold and 9780 handsets.

Hey,
The question of which way to upgrade, wireless versus Blackberry Desktop Software, is a good one. The main difference is that it only takes about 30-45 minutes to upgrade with the computer while it can take up to 2 hours to perform wirelessly. I always recommend BDS for upgrading since it is faster and less things can go wrong. If the download is interrupted, then it can affect your upgrade during wireless upgrade. Anyways, thats my opinion on that subject.
So far, so good. I just got a call from work and I do not have to work but am on call, so I will be up tonight monitoring my device and using different apps trying to see if any problems occur. I will post here if they do.

Interestingly enough - someone at work pointed out to me the 9650 has a GSM SIM card in it when you buy it which is why the CDMA/GSM question at the beginning of every OS restore comes up. I thought about it for a minute and he said "Ever think about pulling it out so it only connects to CDMA?". I didn't think much of it, plucked the card out today and guess what, OS 6 lags no more.
I've been using BBs for years and all I gotta say is ...what the hell? Why does that even do ANYTHING let alone work?

Hey, William,
This is interesting. I forgot about my Sim card, which I turned it around backwards and left it in the device a few months ago. That was one of the things I did in hopes to stop the random reboots.
I am happy to report that the latest OS 6 works well. It has been installed almost 24 hours and not the first reboot. Everything seems to be working well. Battery drain in minimal and I continue to receive a strong, steady 3G signal. I think this software release was a winner, at least for me so far.

I am having no reboots here either although this is my first Bold 9650 and my first try at OS 6 on it. It seems much better now that I"ve pulled that SIM card out I have no intention of traveling abroad in the forseeable future and if/when I do - I think I will get a tracphone or some other throw-away phone.
