Can't sync address book Blackberry

Using desktop software, I can't syn my address book & spent over 5 hours on it so far. When I check off the Address Book and click to configure it goes through all the usual steps, finishes, displayed the check mark like it should but then it unchecked itself after a few seconds. I think it is related to Gmail. I've had it working fine for many months then it suddenly stopped and will not let me configure it. Called Verizon, read all the online forums but no luck. I am not a BES user. I have unchecked all my wireless sync options. Is it related to the automatic Gmail update that was put onto my device that I can't get rid of?
