Try enable Mass Storage Mode on your Blackberry Curve 8530. Don't know how options in curve is setup, but set Mass Storage Mode to "Prompt," that your smartphone will ask you if enable Mass Storage Mode.

With a MicroSD card already in place, go to โOptionsโ ๏ Media Card ๏ Mass Storage Support. Ensure the option here is set to โOnโ.
Now when you plug your BlackBerry in to your PC via USB you will be prompted to turn on Mass Storage Mode, select โYesโ and type in your password if prompted.

That definately could be the issue. Once you download the new software for your device let us know if that resolves your issue.

I have seen this issue with older desktop software but not the other way around. If I understand your setup, you have a 8530 with v4.2 on it? It should be a newer OS than that. Also, if you have desktop manager v5.0.1, it should be able to detect and access older phones.
We do it all the time when upgrading older blackberries with new ones. Now if the Desktop manager is v.4.2 and the OS is 5.0.x, then that would make more sense why it is not detecting the device. The 8530s come with 5.0.x OS now by default so this would make more sense to me.
