Error message insert sim card

I picked up a blackberry bold from Verizon World Traveler to go to Italy. When I arrived here, I get a message to insert a sim card. I have disconnected the battery, removed the sim card, and then reinstalled both. Still the same message. Is there some other setting that I need to change or is this just a bad sim card.

Hello inaja! The error message you’re seeing on your Bold indicates that the SIM has not been activated on your Verizon Wireless account. Without activating it, you will not be able to use the Bold on any of the Verizon Wireless’ roaming partners’ networks! Please verify that you have arranged for this device to be used so that I can assist you. Thanks!
