I upgraded from a Motorola Razr to a Storm 9530 on 10/03/09. I love the internet browsing, email alerts, free apps and ringtones from Crackberry, and the look and feel of this phone. The problem is that I have to soft reboot it (removing battery, waiting at least thirty seconds and replacing it) at least twice a day. It freezes up constantly! It won't let me make or receive calls at least three times daily. I have used memory cleaner and made sure no apps were running (I have only downloaded four apps and three ringtones, so I don't think I'm trying to get it to do too much. It seems great as a computer, but my Razr was a way better phone! I also don't really like the touchscreen. I really wanted to, but even with small fingers, I often hit the wrong letters when texting or surfing and even the wrong numbers when I am able to make a call. I'm so disappointed! I have taken it in to the store once and they tried to help me with it, but the phone part is still not working right. I called customer service and the lady recommended the Imagio (which I don't know if I'll like because it costs more and has a touch screen and no flash for the camera) and the Tour (which may be good because it is a BlackBerry and it has a flash and actual button keypad, but what about the trouble people say they have with the trackball?). I am still within my thirty days, so I want to find a smartphone (preferably) that I will like. Can anyone help me decide? Or is there one that wasn't mentioned that would be better for me? I just use the computer side of the device for fun and email because I am a stay-at-home mom who teaches college courses part time, if that helps narrow down my options. Thanks in advance!

the storm is really one of those devices that you either love or hate...i love mine...i had to download leaked 5.0 OS to get it to run smoothly though. the keyboard does take some time to get use too...i'm aware of that. within the next few weeks rim and verizon will release an official 5.0 OS that will correct the keyboard problem. it will have pop up text which displays the key you are about to press before you click the screen...it makes sure you are clicking the correct key before you click the screen. another thing with 5.0 it will correct memory issues and also have the flick scrolling like the iphone...which will make scrolling a lot faster. you will have threaded sma among other things. issue with having to pull out your battery several times a day...that should not happen! a) your either having software issues with os b) you got a bad device c) you are having memory issues. with you saying that you were going to crackberry downloading freebie apps could be your problem for memory leaks. i had it happen to me. you can try backing up the device in device manager and wiping the device clean and reinstalling your OS...and you should be running RIM OS 4.7.0.148 if not install it. good news is your within the 30 days so if you still hate your storm you can do an exchange. and your so close to the storm2 date but i dont think you will be able to return in time for a storm2. i've never owned the tour but i've heard of trackball issues with it also. maybe a tour person can shed some light on the tour. ive heard of the droid coming out soon...its not a blackberry...i believe its to be released next month. once again i'm not sure you will be able to return in time. also i googled the htc imagio...it looks pretty cool...software i like..but i'm a die hard blackberry fan. google youtube videos of the imagio...i'm sure you will like.

This is a copy of an earlier post I did that if you have not tried all you need too!
clearing log file, clearing memory in addition to the bat. pull? You need to 1 be sure when you finish with any app you have opened, to close it. You do that by pushing BB Menu button and scroll to the bottom where it says "switch apps". That will open a bar across your screen and show everything that is open and running. There are some you will never close like phone,Internet, BB Messenger,,and email. Anything else should be closed. If not, click on it and then the BB button and scroll down to close.
Now for memory cleaning, click on Internet (world globe) open it and then BB But., then scroll down to options, push that, there should be three items in there, skip to the last one Cache, click on it, then 3 more will show, click on each one where it says clear and so on until it is all cleared out, then back your way back out and then either do a bat. pull manually or using the bat pull app. Then when it is up and running again push options icon, scroll to memory, and then scroll thru memory and see how much is reported, should be over 30MB. Oh you can also on the home screen, switch apps., push green home screen but., then keyboard, then go to numbers on keyboard and type "/"/"/" you may not need the 3rd set if it opens, when that opens the log, push BB but. and the second item is clear log, push it. Are you deleting emails as soon as you have read them? Are you deleting phone log? Open phone dialer and go to the center top middle phone icon with arrows push it and a log will open of every call you made or received then push BB But and scroll down to delete. If you have never done this there is no faster way I am told, than one at a time, so once it is done, it is best to empty it at least once a day. Yeah there is a lot of work with this phone!

Thank you so much for these instructions. I did everything you suggested and still was left with only 25-point-something of memory instead of at least 30. I only had four apps and all were free: App World, Viigo, Frugalytics, and Wattpad. So I deleted one of the apps I had gotten (Viigo) and it said 26.0 instead of 30. Then I deleted another of my apps (Frugalytics) and it said 26.2. When I deleted Wattpad, it said 26.7. Finally, I deleted BlackBerry App World and it said 31.6. That's great, but what is the point if I can't have any apps? Is that normal?

Meant for this to be a reply to LCromwell, but it looks like I replied to myself!--How embarrassing!

Yes, I did. After that, I went to bed and didn't make another call or touch the phone again until 6 this morning. When I did, my memory was low again! I checked the call log first, and it showed a bunch of calls I had made on 10/03 through 10/05 that I had deleted already before. I tried to access this site earlier from the phone, and all the drop menus above (Phones & Accessories, Plans, etc.) were down and I couldn't get them off. I have soft rebooted twice already today and gone through you clean up tips again. i feel like I've gone crazy!

you need to wipe your device...delete everything in your phone and reinstall your os...you have a memory leak somewhere. or take the phone back to the verizon store and let them do it. and there was no need to delete those apps you had...i have 20 apps now on my phone and i dont have to do battery pulls daily...maybe once or twice a week. i'm down to 15mb of memory left and my phone does not freeze. you have a software bug somewhere that is eating your memory...if you wipe your device and reinstall os and start adding the software back on that you deleted your phone should work good. if you are doing what the op suggested closing out programs your phone should not freeze. also when downloading programs try to stick to the ones in bb app world...i've found that sometimes getting software from other sites cause major memory leak issues. did you delete your crackberry ringtone? when i had memory leaks with my storm it was a $10 application from crackberry that did it. wiping my device solved the issue.

Do you know how to delete call log? Not that a few calls will take up that much memory. main memory waster is apps left open. you push the Internet globe / browser app, then BB Menu to open, scroll down to options, push options blue bar, then scroll down to Cache Operations, then click on each item to the right clearing them. The Pushed content in the list will open another blue item and that is yes. then click the last one cookie content. Then push the back button also known as u-turn it should say "cleaning memory" Then keep pushing until you get to the Home screen. Then push the BB menu again and scroll down to the very bottom of the list and push Switch Application, all that should be showing accross the screen is as follows BB messenger,Phone, Green Home page, email(mail box) and the Internet browser. If anything else is showing click it then BB Menu and scrooll down to close, and push close. Now pull your bat. again and report back.

I've done that too (sorry, I thought I had already replied to this message from you earlier today!). I'm still having trouble and memory issues. This is really frustrating! NowI have people recommending the LG ENV Touch, the Palm Centro (which I don't think Verizon has), and the LG Dare, as well as the BB Tour and Curve. I just want to occasionally surf the web for fun, get a couple of nifty apps and some cool ringtones, maybe be able to download some of my music from my laptop to listen to, take decent pictures and video of my kids, get my emails, and of course talk and text on the phone! I don't want one that freezes up and freaks out all the time or one that I can't put anything on and keep it on there. Maybe I want too much ?!

You don't have a lemon. All the Storms do this. No matter what anyone says, these are poorly manufactured phones. My Storm does the same thing. I have wiped my device twice and it still does it. I have spent countless hours on the phone with Verizon and they still can't help. I bought a $10.00 app called Memory Booster and it still doesn't help. Me and three of my friends have the Storm and all of them do this. It's not just your phone and no matter what anyone says the Storm is a flop. My wife has the Tour and it is great. She may do one battery pull a week and when she does it, she really doesn't need to. I wish RIM or Verizon would take responsibility for selling a terrible phone. They know of this issues and act like it doesn't exist. I think they should be trying to fix these problems instead of pushing the Storm 2 out. It really sucks that their customers are suffering and they act like nothings wrong. I pay a pile of money each month for Verizon's service and can't really do anything with my phone. I am spending more time checking my memory than doing anything else. As soon as I go to look up something on the internet it freezes. As soon as I pull up an App it freezes. As soon as someone calls me it freezes. It's not only my phone, but a lot of other's as well. My friend got a replacement because his original Storm was acting up. Guess what. He has the same issue with the new one. So tell me that it's just a coincidence. I'm not hearing it. Maybe Verizon and RIM will take a little consideration to their customers and help us out. I can't afford to buy another phone. I am not rich and I work hard for my money. Why should I have to pay for their mistakes!

i'm sorry youre having issues with your storm. for most people its simply they dont know how to work there phone or they are downloading bad applications. if you close out every application after use you should not have memory issues unless your phone is filled with a bunch of apps...when i say a bunch 20+ cause i have over 20 apps on my phone and i do not have memory issues...but i'm also running OS 5.0.0.323. another issue is simply people downloading bad applications that hog your memory and you dont even know it. applications that install at 1mb and over the day take up 15mb of memory....its because the software developer did not properly debug the software. now thats whats wrong with most people phone when they get the storm...its like your running windows 95 and you want to leave 20 windows open? why? you cant do that...blackberry storm has way less memory than windows so you know you need to close the apps after use...and where people make mistakes is they surf the net and hit the back key....no that does not close the browser...the browser is still running in the background...you have to go to the bb menu and scroll to close...bottom line.... as far as your wife having a tour....it has twice the amount of memory as the storm1. so she probably could leave a few apps open and not have the same issues as a storm1 user....and i'm not taking up for the storm 100% yes the 4.7.0.148 software is a bit slow but rim/verizon is correcting that monday and they will release 5.0.0.328 OS and i promise you...you will love your storm again

Not sure where your problem lies but I've had my storm for about7 or 8 months and have absolutely no problems with it. It is working flawlessly and I love the phone. It just took me a while to get used to the keyboard after using the BB 8830

First of all, shame on Verizon selling you a Storm 9530 when the 9550 is coming out soon. I had the 9530 early on and hated it. SInce you are still within your 30 days in the hold out for the Storm 9550 or get the Tour. Good Luck.

then you have a bad device...take back to the verizon store and pick out a new phone.
