How do I get my Blackberry Bold 9650 to work in China??

I am currently in China as a student participating in a study abroad program.  I went to the Verizon store to get some info on how my BB Bold 9650 was going to work.  They said the best thing to do is hook up to a wi-fi signal and turn my data plan off and I could make a free call over the internet.  That is not working, and on top of that when I turn on the data plan and it is roaming, it still doesn't work.  I get a message Chinese telling me who knows what.  Can anybody help?

I have listed a link below with all the information needed to use your phone in China. The cost, terms & conditions, places,  dialing code/pattern. With using international roaming a free feature called international dialing is needed on your account to have the ability to use your phone in china. You can contact customer service on the phone or at a corporate store to add the feature. Once this is added, you will need to update your roaming before leaving by dialing *228, send and option #2.
