Last Monday my Blackberry Storm's number key pad quit working and quit displaying the alpha characters. The only key that worked was the '0' key. All other functions worked. I called Verizon and they sent me a replacement phone. I backed up my old phone and activated the new one using *228 from the keypad which worked just fine. I connected to the Desktop Manager on my computer and it immediately told me I needed to update the operating system. I let it update and then restored the backup of the old phone to the new phone. I then tried the phone keypad and it had the identical problem that the old phone had. I called Verizon again and they said they suspected a battery problem and I should take it to a Verizon store. That didn't make since to me or the Verizon store's personnel either. Unfortunately our local store was only a sales store and not a service center and the store clerk told me I needed to take it to a service center. I decided to Google the problem before driving 20 mile to the service center. I found that it was a known problem with the new 5.0 version of the Operating System. The fix is to open ‘Options/Language and text Input’ and change the language setting from English(United States) to just English. I did that and the problem cleared up. The Verizon support people needs to pass this along to their agents so they aren't replacing phones t. One guy on the blog I found, that provided the solution, said he was on his 3rd replaced phone with the same problem. I let our local store know and the clerk said she would pass it along.
