I have a smartphone and would like to activate it for my child. Though, they do not need all of the smart phone capabilities. They merely only need the dumbphone capabilities...texting and calling. Do you have to purhcase a smartphone plan to use the smartphone just for dumbphone capabilities?

yes, if you activate a smartphone, you are required to purchase a data plan

Why not just get a basic phone for them if that is all they need?

There are basic phones with keypads if your child's line is due for an upgrade

yes, she has a basic phone that has a keypad as well. she just likes my bb keypad. i figured if i had a spare bb and could activate it without needing to get a data plan, then why not. not a problem. she can just continue using her basic phone. thanks

Well you can visit eBay and look for a verizon wireless multimedia phone with a full QWERTY keyboard and give that a shot. Otherwise pack up your bags and move to at&t or T-mobile. I don't recommend this option.
