They did start from scratch the screen is completely different and behaves differently and uses completely different technology. This phone is miles ahead of the original Storm launch last year. i have encountered the same issue and it is definately a hardware issue and it must be problem with the piezo pad on the bottom left hand corner. Other than this no problems, ditched the Tour for this phone and loving it. People are jumping to alot of conclusions and being bias because of the original launch last year. If you look at statistics I believe the Tour trackball issue is as bad as several of the storms issues.

My point exactly, New screen, New Technology, Same unproven system, Only now there is 4 pickups to screw up instead of 1. Should have made the Storm 2 a touch screen only instead of the click screen, I don't know why RIM is so hung up on the whole click thing. It will be the DEATH of the Blackberry touch screen phone. As for the Track Balls, Shame on Quality Control.
P.S. Read any on-line forum on the Storm 2, This is going to be a major problem with returns to Verizon same as the Storm 1.
