I ASKED A SALES REPRESENTATIVE AT THE VERIZON STORE WHY MY STORM WOULD ONLY BE UNLOCKED IF I TOOK OUT THE SIM CARD. HE THOUGHT THAT THE QUESTION WAS IF HE COULD UNLOCK IT FOR ME. HE SAID HE COULD NOT HELP ME. I CALLED AND ASKED TECH SUPPORT ABOUT HOW TO UNLOCK THE SCREEN AND THEY SAID TO TAKE OUT THE BATTERY. I DID THAT AN IT STILL WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO HIT THE ENTER KEY WHEN I PUT THE FOUR DIGITS IN UNDER THE PUK CODE LINE. THIS WAS WHY I TOLD THE GUY AT THE VERIZON STORE THAT THE PHONE HAS A ISSUE AND I NEED TO KNOW WHAT A NEW SIM CARD WOULD DO FOR IT. HE NEVER SAID ANYTHING THAT MADE ANY SENSE AS FAR AS IF IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE SIM CARD. I WAS TRYING TO TELL HIM THAT BEFORE I ACCIDENTLY HIT THE LOCK BUTTON ON THE TOP I WAS TRYING TO CHANGE THE SIM CARD CODE UNDER SIM CARD IN THE OPTIONS FOLDER. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT A NEW SIM CARD INTO A BLACKBERRY STORM THAT HAS NO SIM CARD.
The SIM card has no function while the phone is being used in the USA Verizon CDMA network. SIM cards are for GSM type networks and are included in the Storm 9530 to allow the user to utilize the phone overseas with a GSM network. My Bold 9650 has a SIM card and I actually have flipped it backwards to prevent the phone from trying to access it (which wastes battery life).
As far as unlocking the phone for GSM usage, this can be done by calling Verizon Customer Service to obtain an unlock code for your phone. Your account must be in good standing and tell them you are planning to use the phone overseas. An alternate method is to use one of the online unlock code retailers that sell unlock codes for a small fee.
