Will a Blackberry purchased in Germany work in the U.S.?

I am moving to Germany from the U.S. for 6 months and I have suspended my Verizon account...  While I am in Germany, I am looking to buy a Blackberry (not sure which - any suggestions?) and paying for a monthly plan there possibly through Vodafone.  Upon returning to the U.S. in July, I would like to make sure that I can use the same Blackberry with Verizon. 

 

I know that there are different systems and bands that the two continents use, but I'm unaware as to which phones could be used on both continents and how to unlock whatever phone I get - if it is necessary.

 

Any ideas?

Since the BB is purchased in Germany, we can assume it has GSM networking capabilities. However to activate it on VZW's network, it also must be dual band and work on the CDMA network. Also, you must request the German carrier to unlock the ESN/MEID so you can activate it on VZW's network.

Yeah, you won't be able to activate it on VZW. No way, no how. You CAN activate it on AT&T or T-Mobile.
