When the green light on my phone started flashing, I was no longer able to put the phone is standby by pushing the silver button on the top. Why is this and how can I fix it?

The flashing green light indicates connection to the wireless network. If you want it to stop flashing, go to Options>Screen/Keyboard>Led Coverage Indicator and select Off. See if that works for you.
