transfer to a blackberry

I know that for blackberries a data plan is a must to have one on your account and use a blackberry.  But has anyone ever tried to actually buy an unlocked one and switch between phones online through your account?  I wasn't sure how verizon would recognize the difference in phones or if it would even get processed correctly.

as a follow up:  I was reading through some of the old messages on the community board.  Someone mentioned that by using a blackberry it is communicating with RIM for the data along with verizon for the activation.  IF you'd be able to switch them yourself through your account, would RIM ever be notified of having to send data to your phone in the first place?  If that is the case, you'd never be charged for the transfer of data using a normal plan unless the individual would access the internet or use the device for downloads.    Im just trying to get peoples thought on this topic and see if anyone ever brought it up before.
