unlocking 8830 overseas

I have bought a blackberry 8830 (second hand) in Kenya, and have tried to activate the Bis however the network customer care ( in Kenya) has told me that the device may still be locked to the Verizon network. Is there a way i may be able to unlock it from where i currently am?

If you are still in Kenya, try a local hole in the wall phone store.  I just had a GSM phone unlocked and the frequencies changes in Abu Dhabi for about $19. at a little local phone shop.
