Switch free phone still on a contract to BYOD

Added a new line to my family account and received a free phone on a 3 year contract.  Not fully satisfied with the phone and want to know if I can switch the phone on that line to a BYOD without affecting the existing phone contract?

I'm sorry to hear you're not satisfied with your new phone. You have 30 days to return or exchange the device in good condition. If it's no longer eligible for return base don purchase date, yes the phone must remain active to continue the discount. https://www.verizon.com/support/return-policy/
