Looking for someone that might know the answer to this.
Here is the run down.....
Hughesnet Satellite (have now) only 475MB per month.
Verizon Mifi 2200, have the 1 GB per month.
All Updates are turned off.
We live remote so no other users.
Averarge usage for us, is right at 475MB per month.
So,
In Six days of "average" usage the VZAccess shows 435.335
I have to Assume that this is just under a Half of a gig, 500.000 right?
I am Also on a Static page, no updating and such and while all auto updates and such are off, (Even Mail is not automatic, have to press Get Mail) but yet I see in the VZAccess and in Status, its Pinging or Sampling using up bandwidth.
Anyone know why it would be using Way more bandwidth than I think it should.
I mean, Megs are Megs and Gigs are Gigs so its hard to understand why the Mifi is sucking up or Seems to be sucking up way more bandwidth than the Hughesnet below average satellite service..

In answer to your question, the device was in a place where it would be possible to get an incredibly weak connection from outside of our house, but we had it password protected, so that was not the issue.

Thanks for clarifying! Now I am at a loss.
Did you read the usage or did they tell you what it was??? Just wonder if they read it incorrectly.
Was this the first month bill??? I wonder if it is a prorated bill

I have both read the usage and been told what it is because I have called in several times. Also, this is not the "pro rated bill" as you said it could be. Honestly, it really seems like you are someone who works for Verizon trying to make it seem like this is some silly mistake that I am making so when people read this they will not think your product is bad. Too clarify for everyone reading this THIS DEVICE IS TERRIBLE, IT CHARGES YOU FOR A DRASTICALLY HIGHER AMOUNT OF DATA THAN YOU ACTUALLY USE, DO NOT GET IT. I am very disappointed in verizon for their costumer service on this issue.

VERY interesting...this is the EXACT timeframe that my problems started. I want to report this to the FTC...my bill is up over $300 now. Do I need a lawyer? Call Chanel 12 ON Your Side (tv investigators?). The BS I am getting from the staff at Verizon is horrific in light of what I am now reading on this site. Will document and send to FTC.

Hi I just found this site and I feel a little better knowing I am not alone in this! This timeline thing is interesting...I ordered this 12/28/11 and activated it around Jan 3 2012. The first month I was 37GIG OVER (i.e. $370) and when I called customer service to find out what the heck was going on, he told me I was already 9GIG ($90) over for the next billing cycle...I explained that was totally IMPOSSIBLE - my job is a 3 1/2 hour round trip commute every day, I'm hardly ever home, let alone on the computer! PLUS, I had barely even used the mifi at that point, I had trouble initially setting it up and hadn't had much time to really check it out and make sure it even worked ok. Of course no-one could give me an explaination, they insist that the "data was used". etc. etc. Countless phone calls - tech support, cust service, you all know the routine (To add insult to injury, I had also signed on for their "home-phone connect", thinking I would save $$ on that as well. Turns out, I can't use that for faxing and it doesn't work with a home alarm system, which no-one ever said. They also lumped everything together onto my cell phone account. Since the dispute re these MIFI overage charges, they refuse to credit me anything and would not allow me to just pay my cell phone portion of the bill.) Subsequently, they shut off all my services...between late fees, overage and early termination fees, come to a grand total of $1500. More than 20 phone calls later (all documented), countless hours and I have gotten absolutely nowhere.

Same thing happened to me, verizon is nothing but a big rip off. Writing a letter to FFC, don't know if it will do any good but going to try.

Just my own bit of 2 cents here. I would go to the FTC, The BBB and the PUC. I have seen this before (mostly on Cell Phones) and three are monitors you can set up that detect packet usage and data transmissions. Funny thing is Verizon will always tell you they are incorrect, yet there are some that the government uses and are certified correct and accurate to within 10 kb. At a higher level action Verizon would be very hard pressed to try to dispute the Govt Certified app claiming theirs is more accurate especially with the thousands of people complaining about it.
Once the FTC and BBB get involved Verizon will start working with you, if the PUC gets involved, they will start immediately as they have so long to resolve before teh PUC launches their own investigation. Guess what, the PUC uses the same Govt Certified apps to check this.

Sharon I urge you to review the threads here (not this particular one) for the same issues on the iPhone. When IOS6 was released and pushed out they had an issue (may or may not still be going on) where ALL data (Wifi included) was being counted as Data itself. Even those that shut off Mobile Data and used Wifi Only were hit with Data usage. Verizon has a ticket open on it and one of the threads goes into great detail on the issue and what you need for when you call Verizon to dispute the overage charges. Hope it helps and I will run back through the posts as well to see if I can locate it and pass you the link to it.

Not the same. The iphone issue had to do with IPv6. I suspect most issue with the Jetpack involve lack of security, poor security, leaving it on 24/7 and lack of knowledge of how much data they are actually using. Not to mention most likely their computer set up to do auto updating in the middle of night.

I shut it off at night. I shut if off for two weeks that I was in China. I changed the password the minute I set it up. I'm telling you this thing is either being hacked into, or we are being scammed by Verizon. Mifi is a piece of junk. Now I am stuck with a two year contract, and robbery at the data usage point as well - for two years. If you have not already bought Mifi - SKIP IT. You will be sorry. People (including Verizon) are replying to these posts as if we are all internet morons. Not so! There are real issues here. There is no way I am getting pinged to the tune of 5 gigs a day. B.S.
VERIZON - Stop stealing from your customers! Figure out what the problem is and return our money. Take back your equipment and allow us to cancel this bogus contract. It's the business smart thing to do. I know, you know, and everyone else with Mifi knows there are serious problems with this equipment. Stop assuming we are all doing something wrong. Not so. YOU are over charging.

A) it's an APPLE issue. Verizon is not the only carrier with this issue on the Iphone.
B) Verizon has already stated that you will NOT be required to pay on overage due to this error.

My 2/20/12 bill had a $10 usage charge for my Mobile WiFi, claiming we used 6 rather than the 5G we signed up for. My wife and I were sitting on the couch on the last night of the period looking at the account page wondering if we should try to download a movie since we'd only used 4.1G. Received the email and text notifications that we'd used 75% a few days before. Never received any notice that we'd used 90% or all of the allotment. The store told me to go home and call customer support. Customer support told me there is a password on the account (not the web password or the device password) and they can't help me unless I go back to the store and show ID to change the password. The WiFi device itself goes offline for no perceptible reason. I'm ready to contact the Utilities Commission or FCC to see if I can cancel my three contracts with Verizon without having to pay early termination fees. I fully expect there will be a class action suit before long on the SCH-LC11 WiFi device.

Hi, if I'm not mistaken Hughesnet does not count upload data. Don't know if that applies to you and your usage, but I'm sure it would make some difference.

This has been a big problem of mine, started when I first got the 4150 in May. My average usage prior to that was ~5 or 6 GB. Since then it has gradually increased up to ~15 or 16GB. I spoke to Customer Service, the only thing they could come up with is that since the speed is faster, it uses more bandwidth. I even tried going back to the 2200 to see if it was the speed, and still used 10GB. I am looking at some replacement options...

I have a phone with the mobile hotspot and can tell you that the day I activated it my data nearly doubled. When I use the wireless hotspot it doesn't even show up as broadband useage on my account. Yes I pay for the feature. I made certain VZW knew it does this so as to avoid any problems. They tried to blame it on someone using the service too but I would be able to see that. I just said thank you as I don't honestly believe they know what is going on any more than I do.

I think they do know what is going on seeing as how they have so many complaints about it (just look around the internet). The issue is that their device uses up a ridiculous amount of phantom data meaning that regardless of how little data a user actually uses, they are going to go over the limit. A have done some reading around the internet and it seems that this increase came around the December/January time frame. Verizon came out with an update for their radios at this point that was supposed to help with the transition between 3g and 4g, this could be the issue. Either way AT&T customers are having the same problem and and they are making a lawsuit against AT&T http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/05/19/lawsuit-claims-att-overcharges-iphone-data-users-up-to-300/ saying that AT&T is overcharging their customers 300%. Hope Verizon figures out this issue before it goes this far.

Yeah and then they act like your stealing data when you call about the overages. Totally rid off. Looks like a lawsuit.

this same thing is happening to me!! IN 3 hours, over 16 GB were racked up...I never watch movies, rarely stream Youtube, mostly just check email, check FB, and mostly read research for work, occassionally play Mahjong. No habits have changed in one year, then suddlenly starting a month ago, just several days into the new billing cycle, I am already OVER the allotted data. I was recommended to upgrade (of course!)from 5GB to 10GB...same thing, within hours, data usage is up. What the hell??? I have talked to managers, in store, over the phone and they insist someone is hacking in...yet, no one lives close by (am in rural area)...I am ready to cancel my Verizon subscription.
