Wondering if I buy this equipment and can use only when travel to the US (once a quarter for 5-10 days). I mean buy the equipment and add the prepaid plan when travel only, is there other associated fees? monthly fees, etc? I live in Canada and the roaming packages are extremely expensive

If you buy the device in the US, yes you can!
If you use this refill card:
In the US, add the card by calling (800) 786-8419. It takes two calls to first add and next call to speak to an agent to purchase/activate a data plan. Once a card is added to an account the account balance expires based on the balance:
Less than $29.99 30 Days
$30.00 $74.99 90 Days
$75.00 $99.99 180 Days
$100.00 and above 365 Days
When a data plan is purchased you have X time to use the data depending on the data plan:
$15 500MB 7 Days
$20 1 GB 1 month
$35 2 GB 2 months
$60 5 GB 2 months
$100 10 GB 2 months
These cards are easier to use through My Verizon and the Mobile Broadband Portal, but you have to make sure My Verizon has been setup by calling Verizon.
