It looks like the MiFi 4510L Support page has been updated with new documentation.
See the following link for more information:
http://support.verizonwireless.com/system_update/mifi4510l.html
The new benefits include:
1. Obtaint your SIM info from the Diagnostics menu of the Web UI
2. Stronger Web UI password/Securit Key (new devices)
3. Improved connection in 3G/4G areas
4. Improved handoff performance in 3G/4G areas
5. Improved VPN stability
6. Enhanced device capability to use USB power to extend battery life
7. Added device capability to support delivery of future software OTA
There is release date has not been revealed for this firmware update. Some say it will be on 11/1...
It looks like this firmware update will not be forced like the previous update. We can download and install this one when we are ready to do so.

The current firmware version is 2.16.
The new firmware version of 2.23 is available as of this morning.
The direct download link to the firmware update can be found here:
http://production.4510.verizon.mifiupdates.com/Windows/MiFi4510LWin.zip
The software had difficulty moving forward after I connected my USB cable. This is probally because it takes a few moments for the MiFi to shutdown its broadcast before it will accept the update and I was too hasty. I left my USB Cable plugged into my laptop and relaunched the installation and was successful on my 2nd attempt. The whole process took around 10 minutes to complete.

A few changes I have noticed on the new firmware:
1. It looks like the "Global" setting under WWAN preferred mode has been reworded. Now the option displays as "LTE/CDMA"
2. The Firmware Update button on the home page is no longer available. There appears to be a new Software Update page tucked under the Advanced menu to replace this feature.

This update managed to "brick" my device as well.
My device shows a 4 bar/ -50 RSSI EVDO signal available, but will not connect to it.
The diagnostics page simply says "EVDO connection failed" whenever I attempt to connect.
Guess I have a replacement 4510L on the way overnight courtesy of Verizon's tech support.

Thanks for the updates everyone,
Here is a quick summary of the issues that have been posted:
1) Mac firmware client:
It sounds like there is an issue with the Firmware Update software for Mac's. The quick solution appears to be reflashing the firmware with a Windows computer.
2) Bricked/Non-responsive MiFi:
A few users have reported that the firmware update has broken thier MiFi. Followup's have reported that Verizon is replacing these devices if the firmware update itself is to blame.
3) Better performance?
Reviews are mixed. Some users are reporting better results after the firmware update. Others are reporting no improvement. Anything else that has been reported has been tied back to a bricked/failed device. Verizon appears to be replacing those bricked devices. In general I would conclude thus far that the firmware update has not made any existing issues worse.

I noticed there is a new setting on the WiFi menu for WMM, an entry for Backward compatibilty. Setting this fixes the problems I have had where mobile devices, (phones - Samsung Focus and Captivate, Kindle 3 and Fire) would cause the Mifi to hang and freeze. Thanks Verizon, now this device is working VERY well.

Downloaded and installed the update last night - I'll be cautiously optimistic and say it looks like it might have solved the disconnection issue. I have remained connected all day today (so far)... it also seems to have fixed the time issue - the clock is now correct instead of being in a time zone many miles west of the Pacific coast!
It installed fine for me ...

I'm bricked too. I wonder if it's a particular update host? I updated from a Mac, did the others that brick also use the Mac update? Did those that work use a PC?

There are others over on the EVDOforums with the same problem. I had to have my ticket escalated to Verizon network support...which can take 2-3 days for a response. Level 2 tech support guy said they weren't even notified of 2.23 udapte.
Lovely.

I preformed the 2.23 update on a Mac with OSX 10.6.5. I did not receive any error mesages during the "flash."
For some reason, I am unable to roll back to 2.16 without the installer freezing on a blank page.
I've fallen back to my old Mifi 2200 for 'net access.

This "upgrade" has not worked for me. It'll still go dormant and then nothing works on the web. EXCEPT... I can ping outside ip addresses and do a dns lookup all day long. I just can't surf and it's been acting the same way since before I updated the firmware.
This thing is a joke. I never had issues like this with the 2200. FIX THIS!!!
Only way to get it working again is to disconnect and hit connect again. Something is definitely wrong with this device. I've tried from multiple platforms and I can reproduce this problem all day long. It's only a matter of time.

Already been there and done that.... and given the amount of threads and replacements that have been given out with no success, what does that matter anyway?

JT - I have had this same exact problem - Will lose web browsing ability (server taking too long to respond, or server unavailable) yet I can ping internet site by hostname just fine; which tells me that DNS lookup is still working and that ICMP is working. I can even see the ICMP packets in the Connection Log. Only working fix is to drop the call and reconnect.
For me, it is worse becuase one computer will lose the internet but another using the same MiFi is working just fine. So to disconnect and reconnect to fix one then affects the other.
I have recently noticed that the problem can be reproduced by establishing a GRE VPN connection. Within a few minutes of making the VPN connection using one Windows client, all other windows clients (Vista and Win7) using the same MiFi (I have up to four at a time) will lose browsing ability, but can still ping. I just installed the 2.23 fw today and will see if that helps - Verizon states that it does address "some" known VPN issues.
I am curious if you are running any VPN solution and if so, are your symptoms related to the use of your VPN?

I understand how inconvenient this can be. I'm here to help.
@Chris70,
Novatel will provide a fix in a future MR release for this issue. As a temporary workaround for this issue, change the 802.11 mode on the device from '802.11g+802.11b+802.11n' to '802.11g+802.11b' by following these instructions:
1. Connect a PC to the MiFi4510L wirelessly.
2. Open a browser session on the PC and connect to the device by typing http://192.168.1.1/ in the address of the browser.
3. Log into the device by entering the password (default is 'admin') and select Login
4. On the home screen, select the Wifi tab, then select the '802.11g+802.11b' option for the 802.11 Mode.
5. Once the 802.11 Mode is set to '802.11g+802.11b', select the 'Apply' button, then select 'OK'.
The device will re-start and be ready to use.
I hope this has been helpful.
