Going on a trip to Europe. Will the MiFi work? Should I call version in advance to change plan so that this would not end up costing and arm and a leg?

No, the MiFi will not work in Europe. It uses CDMA protocol, and most of the rest of the worid uses the completely incompatible GSM. However, you can buy USB modems in Europe very inexpensively with Pay-as-you-go plans. For example, I got a Vodaphone USB stick in Edinburgh for about $30 with 5 GB of data included, which could be refilled for $20 per 5 GB.
