Hi everyone,
New Jetpack owner of a MiFi 4620L/LE device that I bought yesterday, and it works great. No issues in connection and charging so far, so I'm pretty happy with it.
However, I started to get notifications of a mandatory update available (currently on 3.20.16) and when I would choose "Install", it would restart but give me an error and say it was not installed and nothing was changed. It would keep doing that loop unless I choose "Defer" which ignores the update until I have to turn off the device again.
I tried doing it over the air/device as well as the web browser but so far no luck. Did a hard reset as well to see if that may help but so far, no luck.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!
Tim

Just to verify some things, you tried to log into your MiFi administration page (192.168.1.1) and update from there? Same thing happens?
You also tried using the update using the .PDF instruction? Same issue?

Is the errors exact works as you posted them above? Or are there numbers or anything else?

@MiiHere I would get:
Firmware Update:
A mandatory firmware update is available. INSTALL.
After clicking INSTALL, I'd get:
Firmware Update:
All connections will be lost. Click OK when ready to start. OK.
When clicked, it would restart, then say:
Update Unsuccessful:
Sorry, there was a problem updating your MiFi4620L. No changes were made. OK.
After clicking OK, It would go to:
Firmware Update:
A mandatory firmware update is available. INSTALL. DEFER.
After clicking DEFER, it would say:
Firmware Update:
The firmware update will be installed upon the next startup. OK.

Thanks for all your help MiiHere!
Using the MiFi administration page, same thing happen. It would prompt my MiFi that it has an update and go through the process I mentioned.
However, going through the pdf, I was able to FINALLY update from 3.20.16 to 3.30.13.
But now here's the kicker - it's still asking me to update my firmware. I'm assuming the linked file on the pdf is outdated and there's a new firmware somewhere because it's still asking me to update.
I did a search and it led me to Novatel's website with their support driver:
http://www.nvtl.com/index.php?cID=1049
However, that was only one file (as opposed to two on Verizon's pdf) and after downloading and going through the process, nothing seem to change with the device itself.
This is one confusing process

In reading your post again, are you sure that 3.20.16 isn't the latest firmware? I pulled that .PDF right from Verizon. You should have a quick Chat session with Verizon to see what the current firmware is, if you do have it, I bet there is a setting on MiFi so it will stop alerting you to updates.

Rookie mistake on my part for not double checking what the latest firmware actually is. I will get another cup of coffee, that might help.

No problem, at least I was able to update my device to something newer MiiHere.
I contacted Verizon and unfortunately they have no answer for me. The link they referred me to is what you've already suggested, and I've told them it contains an old firmware.

Hopefully it's newer. Honestly though, I've never had a problem with firmware until I got a new Windows 8.1 laptop, then I had all kinds of "limited" internet issues. Since then I bought a new router and every time it comes back, I seem to be able to update firmware and cure the problem. Hopefully in your case it will still work for a long time before you encounter any issues.

I would bring the jetpack into a VZW store and ask a rep to complete the firmware update for you. They will fail and then run you through your remaining options for replacement or support. Firmware glitches are usually covered even when the warranty on a device has been exceeded.

Thanks John Getzke. I thought about bringing it to my local provider but I got a couple questions/possible concerns:
I bought the MiFi as "new" from Amazon so I don't get locked into a contract. I also have a second phone line that is still in contract (which I rarely use) and the sim card from that smart phone (Note 3) fit my MiFi (I should've mentioned this as well in the beginning MiiHere, not sure if that would've caused it) and it worked right away.
- Do you guys think that by having a sim card activated for voice/data would cause this issue? I've read in forums that this worked which is why I tried it as first, but didn't hear any feedback regarding update issues since I would assume that's a device concern and not a line/sim.
- Or would I be forced to add on the extra $20/month line service for the MiFi specifically?
Thank you all for the help!

Logically, you’re using a Note 3 and Verizon expects it to have a particular firmware version and doesn’t find it. Verizon then flags your device that it needs an update. Your device would then search for an update. Once the update is found and installed; Verizon still expects a particular Note 3 firmware version and doesn’t see it so it raises the update flag and the cycle repeats.
Yes! $20 Line Access! You should be able to get the right SIM card for it from Verizon.

Thanks 7e18n1. That's what I was afraid of. What you're saying makes sense, although I somehow think it may be device specific (firmware wise) just because thinking about how others would switch phones every now and then and not having to get a new sim card (for example, grandfathered unlimited plan users who switches phones to keep their plan). Of course, I can't rule your suggestion out unless I actually get this MiFi on its own line.
MiiHere That's what I was thinking. I had the Note 3 as my 2nd line but has been shelved for nearly 4 months without use, and when I got the MiFi, I noticed it took the same sim as the Note 3 so I figured - let's try it, and it works! According to this pdf, the current firmware should be 3.30.15 which I should be able to update from 3.30.13 (which I currently have) http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/Mifi4620L-upgradev2.pdf but if it is because of my sim, then it could be a moot point
If this would save me the $20/month line access, I can live with the device trying to update every time I turn it on and off, since I purchased it for the sole purpose of using it as a hotspot in a rural area I frequent one weekend a month (so I can attach an antenna to better just signal) and just need it for work. What I was even thinking is, using that $20 I would've spent on a line access on additional data for my usage.

A whole new can of worms! (:
If it works for you to keep switching the SIM card back and forth and your internet works I say why add the $20. However if you did add the $20, then yes they would give the device it's own SIM card at which point it would more than likely help you update your firmware correctly; I still think the original 3.20.16 was the latest, but can't find anything to confirm.

I already attached the link for them to download and they installed it. I'm just puzzled as to why you can't find out for sure which firmware is the latest; even the Verizon rep didn't know when they inquired to make sure that 3.30.13 was correct, which it very well could be as I pulled the link for the file right off Verizon's website.

Agreed MiiHere. It took the Verizon rep a while as well to figure out what the latest firmware is, and even can't figure out why the pdf/support where to download the firmware, unzips as 3.30.13, rather than the latest 3.30.15.
This DUU file unzips as 3.30.13 which makes me think they didn't update that link to the correct firmware.

The PDF says 3.30.15 is only available to those running 3.30.13.
Is 3.30.13 running on your Jetpack?

7e18n1 It is now. My jetpack started in 3.20.16, which I was able to update to 3.30.13 using the instructions from http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/mifi4620l_instructions.pdf
Although after updating it via usb, it still wouldn't update via over the air or admin page.
