UML295 issue

I very recently upgraded to the UML295 from the USB760.  On the old modem I was getting about 80-85 dbm average.  Now changing to 4g and a supposedly better modem, I am averaging 110-114 dbm.  I have not changed my antenna.  I haven't moved out of my office here in my home.  Nothing has changed except the modem.  Any ideas why I have such a low speed?  I was told that the Pantech would be a better modem and that going to 4g would speed things up.  Okay, who were they trying to kid.

Forgot to add that it has a habit of disconnecting and also searching for the modem.

Hi Gmagg,

I'd like to help you! The speeds on your device can be affected by many factors. What's your zip code? Are you on the indoors? Ensure you've downloaded the latest VZW access manager software for the new device on your computer. Here's a link to help http://tiny.cc/mhma4w.

Thanks,

Firstly, I am unable to reply on the discussion. Where is the reply button?

Second, I don't have the VZAccess Manager. I

have the Mobile Broadband Manager.

Again, where is the reply button on the forum discussion?

Thanks

Can you please do a site survey so we can get a better idea of what you RSSI info is, your issue could possibly be corrected with an Antenna, or amplifier etc.  First Lets have you do a site survey. Click Me

Anything over -105 dBm means no signal.

Current RSSI( 4GLTE) : -112

It has been fluctuation between -109 and -113 most of the time.  It is not disconnecting like it was.

I took my 6" Booster Antenna that I purchased from the 3G store last year.  I moved it until I got 3 bars instead of 2 bars.  I'm on the first floor - my office.  No, my computer is not a laptop so can't move around.  If it was I would probably try to go to the 2nd floor but not an option.

Did another speed test:  Download 16.68mbps Upload  2.08mbps.

Makes me wonder if a stronger antenna would help.

Isn't it actually UNDER -105 dBm? The signal is displayed in negative numbers.

A -95 dBm is a better signal then a -105 dBm. The -95 dBm is a higher value then the the -105 dBm.

I understand.  What I meant was that the number - in the negative - appears as a higher number as far as the number itself.  I do understand the math regarding negative numbers.  Yes, of course the higher number with a minus is worse.  I know that.

Okay, now something really weird is happening.  At the bottom right corner of screen where the icons are, there are sometimes 4 or 5 icons for the verizon mobile broadband manager.  What is that all about?  And today, it has been disconnecting a lot.  Still getting 3 bars but it's a bit hard to continue to complete something if it is always disconnecting.

Ensuring your mobile broadband is working while you're at work is important to us gmagg. I know its frustrating to have disconnection and slow speeds and we will do all we can to help with your issue. Have you attempted to remove VZ access manager and readd it back to your system. This may help with the additional icons and provide you with only one link because you went from one device to a different device. Here are some links to help with the steps http://vz.to/1ccpYpv , http://vz.to/16WHZtr Please keep us posted and I was unable to locate any issues in your area regarding the disconnection. Do you have the latest software updated for your device and system. I look forward to hearing from  you.

The modem does not support VZaccess manager.  The Pantech UML295 uses the Mobile Broadband Manager.  I think I mentioned it in an earlier reply.  I did eliminate the old VZaccess manager because it is not needed.  I did that a couple of days ago.  Yesterday it disconnected less. I really want to know if a stronger indoor antenna will help.  Am considering this one:  http://3gstore.com/product/3709_wilson-304452-directional-panel-antenna.html

Current RSSI is -103

Hi gmagg,

Thanks for the additional info. We do appreciate the troubleshooting you have done this far. Antennas do help get your modem a better connection.  Before you go this route, do you have any other VZ products (i.e. cell phone)? I ask because I would like to know how the service is on them. Also, I have read your other post about the security threat. This is coming from your anti-virus program. Trust me, our software is safe. I would allow the changes to be completed. Keep us posted.

Thanks, BobbyS_VZW

No, I do not have a VZ cell phone.  So, any suggestions for the issues I have shared?  (the low signal and the disconnecting)

You said this:  "I would allow the changes to be completed."  regarding the AVG issue.  I don't know what you mean.  Are you suggesting that I "allow" or "protect"?

Yes gmagg. The changes question is asked when using third party applications or software, such as antivirus protection. If you want to continue to use the AVG option, I recommend allowing it to protect or run a scan. Please be aware our control may be limited with third party software. The application is running between your computer and the security provider. It is not applied on the modem or broadband device itself. It may be a good idea to reach out to AVG as well.

Am I understanding then that if AVG gives me another detection message I should choose the Protect Me option?

Threat:  General behavioral detection

Object name:  C:\Program Files\Verizon\Verizon Mobile Broadband Manager\SmartMobility.exe

It gives me two options:  Protect Me (recommended) AVG will choose the best method for removing this threat.

Allow - Choose this action when you are sure that this detection is not threat and you do not want AVG to detect this again. (Exception will be created). The threat will not be removed.

Reach out to AVG?  What do you mean by that?

I apologize gmagg, but I can't recommend settings to choose on your antivirus software. The main thing is we want to make sure that it is not detecting the device as a threat and ending the connection. The speeds you are receiving when connected are 4G speeds. When you lose connection, are you receiving any errors? I can't recommend 3rd party accessories, but we do have antennae available for this device. You would need both http://vz.to/1fISUt8 and http://vz.to/1i2panI.
