Been having the same issue for almost 2 weeks. They seemed to act like this was just my phone or my area, but I'm seeing threads pop up all over the web regarding it.

I got suckered in to buying a 4G Pantech UML290 a couple of years ago from a Verizon agent who didn't know that 4G was NOT in my area at that time, but now is.  When I tried to switch to it recently, the SIM card was not valid. Verizon is suppose to be sending me a new SIM card at which time I may try to upgrade to that. I'm wondering if this will solve the problem, since possibly this Novatel USB760 is only a 3G. Will post a response when I am able to do the switch and let ya'll know how it goes.

Well the 504's are gone but my speeds have been bad for about two months now.  At least over half the time.   Hopefully soon I will have a wired alternative and I will drop verizon.  They have been working on expanding the cables for about two years now and are getting close!

Hi JubJub33,  Let's bring  back the reliable service that you should expect!  Does this happen when accessing every site at all times?  Does the service improve as you travel to a different area?  I am eager to continue troubleshooting with you!

Thank you,

Since I was the originator of this posting, I am responding to your message. Over the past week, other problems had occurred with modem issues which I have now resolved by upgrading my device to a Jetpack. No connection problems now, although I still have difficulty staying connected using 4G. I have changed the settings on my Jetpack to connect using 3g, which seems to be working perfectly.

As far as the 504 error "gateway timeout" is concerned, while I was troubleshooting my previous modem problems with Verizon Technical Support, we came to the conclusion that the 504 error was occurring due to sunspots, since, per the Support Specialist, all equipment was working normally within my area and that the outages just suddenly appeared for a week or so, finally disappearing completely. As mysteriously as it appeared, it mysteriously disappeared. If I could make a suggestion to Verizon, they should develop a webpage or website that one could access to show connection reliability within a customer's area. Of course, you would probably have to develop a relationship with NASA to keep track of sunspots and interstellar weather patterns between the sun and earth, such as magnetic storms and the like. Also, you should include power outages and tower disruptions, such as during hurricanes or earthquakes whereupon towers could tumble to the ground. But, this is asking for the impossible because of the cost involved. So I WON'T keep my hopes up.
