we have a 3G hotspot card, but it is getting touchy. Want to upgrade to 4G, use it only when we travel but our cabin is not in a 4G coverage area. will it still work there?

A 4G LTE broadband device will revert to accessing the 3G network when 4G LTE isn't available.

Thanks,
We’re looking at the 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFi 4620L or the 4510L or the 890L – any preference?

I would suggest checking out the other discussions on the community and see what the other users are saying. I have no experience with the devices personally.

I would avoid the hotspots (SEE *) and go with a Pantech UML290 combined with a CradlePoint MBR95 Router, the Pantech UML290 also has an antenna adapter port so you can add a 9.5" Full Band Outdoor Omni 3G/4G Antenna or a Cellphone-Mate 3-Watt 2G/3G Direct Connect Amplifier to increase your 3G Coverage if you need to. I think this scenario would be the best option for you. You can get the gear at 3gstore
