Not really any need for VZAM for Linux, you can create a connection using PPP.
idk if this still works, but here's how you do it:
User: <your device's phone #>@vzw3g.com
Number to dial: #777
While you won't have any signal meters, etc, you'll still be able to get online. (this will work in any OS that supports PPP/DUN
Be sure there are Linux drivers for your device, and that your PPP/DUN client is set to use your device to make the connection.
