I have had my network extender for about a week and the range in which it initially connects and stays connected is not great. I have to be 5-10 feet to initially connect. I can then retain the connection about 500 feet within clear line of site (extender is in a window) but once a few cinder block walls walls get in the way, the range drops to 100 feet. I tried several phones with the same results. Is this pretty typical, as it's nothing like the stated 5000 ft.

Yeah, 100 feet line of sight is 10,000 sq feet. So you are doing just fine.
