Why is MIFI 4510 with global data not connecting?

I am staying in Ecuador and am trying to use my Jet Pack  as mobile hot spot.  Before leaving the U.S. customer service assured me that with the global data service I could use MiFi.  I followed the instructions on Verizon for international calling and data. The MiFi does everything it is supposed to do, antenna icon, roaming triangle and purple light.  Thats as far as I can go.  I get messages that say the computer is not connected to the internet.  The purple light will blink every now and then.  Is there something I can do to make the connection?
