Windows XP not recognizing USB 727

Trying to help a friend utilize his 727 on a dell desktop. The modem worked while wintering in Florida. Came back north a few days ago and can't get it to work. Spent 2 hrs on the phone with tech support, but that didn't resolve the issue. We installed, Ui VZAccess mgr and the software for the 727 twice. Still can't get VZAM to detect the device and Windows doesn't recognize it either when it gets plugged in. Have tried three USB ports to no avail.

The tech took us through device mgr looking for the modem. Found it under computer, but not under modems or ports. Also disabled the internal modem on the computer in hopes that this was creating a conflict.  Her thoughts were that perhaps a security device or firewall was creating the problem but she couldn't go in that direction because it's outside the realm of Verizon support.

I think that summarizes the effort. Any thoughts/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Try installing the software on a different computer (friend or family) to see if it works, that will narrow down real quick to the modem or the computer.

Popped the 727 into a Dell Laptop and it was recognized immediately. Embedded software loaded onto the computer and connection was a breeze.

So, what's happening with the other computer that it won't recognize this thing?

Sounds like it maybe the the anti-virus or someother securty program. Do you know what type of anti-virus is installed on the computer that is having issues?

may be several things, JBL is right that antivirus may be blocking it,  I would also make sure that your windows updates are up to date also.  This can play havock on hardware.  Also there may be a driver issue.  Have you installed any software for other hardware like other phones, modems, printers etc?  this can cause problems as well.
