um175 usb modem weak signal

Hi I am trying to get wireless set up for my parents.  got them the um175 usb modem for their hp notebook it works fine upstairs at their house and most places I have tried outside but it does not work downstairs at their house.  does anybody have any suggestions I have read about the antennas and boosters but that kinda defeats the wireless thing. Any help is appreciated.
