When it was first started, National Mutt Day was initially meant to raise awareness about the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation because approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. However, it has also grown year after year into a joyous occasion and a time for celebration! It’s an entire day to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog. For instance, mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, and live longer than their purebred peers! If you have a mutt at home, then don’t forget to give them a little extra love next Monday!
Here are five ways to celebrate National Mutt Day with your mutt:
I can’t write this post and not include my favorite mutt of all time, my dog, Baxter. Nine years ago, my family purchased him from Craigslist for $40 from a family that couldn’t care for him. Let’s just say, that was the best $40 we’ve ever spent! As part German Shepherd and part Corgi, he’s loyal, goofy, cuddly, and can hear you open a bag of treats from anywhere in the house. Whenever we are out on walks or spending time at the dog park, people always want to know more about him because of his awkwardly cute appearance and I proudly tell them that he’s a mutt but he’s the best mutt around!
