Halloween is definitely one of my favorite holidays. However, Midwest chilly weather is not very forgiving this time of the year and not always a good idea for the younger kids to go out Trick-or-Treating. This past summer our family had a few of the women in my family had babies, 5 to be exact! So a cute Halloween picture is in order! This is why my sister, who also had a baby, will be hosting a little Halloween party for all the kids in our family tonight. I can’t wait to see them all dressed up in their cute costumes!!
My favorite part of Halloween is raiding the candy aisle the day after. As a kid, my friends always turned Halloween into a competition of who could cover the most trick-or-treating ground and fill the most pillowcases with candy. As someone who has a special distaste for all things involving face paint, wigs, hairspray, or generally just being in uncomfortable clothing, I was known for putting the least possible amount of effort into my costume while still being able to claim that I dressed up… all in the name of candy. These days, on Halloween you can find me not dressed up, on the couch, answering the door for trick-or-treaters. Then I tell them there’s no more candy because I ate it all.
From a young child to today as an adult, Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. There is a lot to like: trick or treating, the decorations, costumes, and the movies. As a kid I helped my Mom decorate the house and I always tried to remember which houses gave the good candy and would go back later to get more. I always have tested my own personal fear with horror movies and haunted attractions. One of my favorite movies, Night of the Living Dead, is the only movie which scared me as a kid. After that I was hooked. To me, watching all the scary movies marathons on TV – from the classic Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee movies to Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street — is exciting. As is going to Haunted attractions, like Eastern State Penitentiary, which test all of your senses and gets your adrenaline racing. Halloween is a time to let loose and have fun.
I think I might be the only one in my family who can listen to Halloween music any day of the year! I love the classics like "The Monster Mash" and "Werewolves of London." And who can resist singing along to "The Purple People Eater?" Last Halloween, I took my three nephews (all three under the age of 4) out to Trick-or-Treat. Although they were determined to hold their own bags, by the time we hit the end of the street, they had too much candy to hold. This year, my dog, Baxter, and I will be sitting on my front steps, handing out candy to all the kids in my neighborhood. However, they better hurry because my town has a strict 9 pm curfew!
Happy Halloween Everyone!
