3G, high signal drops as soon as my phone dials a number - what's up with that?

While keeping my phone in the same place all week - sitting on my desk or in my hand while I am sitting at my desk, my signal strength constantly varies from no signal or one bar, to 3G with three bars. It goes back and forth every few minutes. Sometimes it keeps a strong signal for a while before inexplicably dropping down. However, if I ever try to make a call, the moment the phone starts dialing, the signal now always drops down to one bar, no 3G. This has been going on for a few days now. Anyone else experience this? Anyone have any idea what might be going on? Does your signal strength stay the same when your phone is dialing a call (not to mention once you are connected as well of course)?

My signal strength sometimes looks good, but always drops down to one bar when the phone starts dialing. Now I can only talk on one bar - not a very good connection, but as soon as I hang up the call, my signal strength indicator goes back up to a few bars, usually with 3G. Anyone have any guesses what might be going on here?

Okay, but should all of my signal bars always drop to 1 whenever my phone tries to dial a number, and should the signal bars always go back up the moment I end a call?

Sound like you are probally between multiple towers when in this location that causes reception to flutuate like that.  My phone signal drops also when I first connect but a second or two it goes back up, I am assuming that this is because the phone does a signal sweep of the towers to get a lock on the closes tower for receprion.. I have noticed this on other phone in pass but this never caused any issues for me.

I'm having the same issue but it only started a week ago (I bought my Droid X on 7/15). Sometimes when I press the Call button, the signal drops from full bar / 3G to no bar / no 3G. The call either simply fails or connects but the quality is very poor. This happens in very different places, when I'm driving or just not moving. As soon as I hang up, I have full signal again.

It's the first time I have a defective product at Verizon and I'm really disappointed. Especially by the fact that no one at Verizon seems to care. Are you guys addressing the issue? Should customers expect a software patch or is it a hardware issue? At least at Apple they had a press conference...

To "TheInsider":

When you ask, "Are you guys addressing the issue?" you need to know that posts on this forum have no impact on Verizon or Motorola tech support. As far as I can tell and have been told, Tech support do not base any of their decisions on forum postings. They do, however, base decisions on problems documented by calls to tech support from a line other than your mobile phone number, in which you follow all of the instructions of the tech people. If you follow all of their instructions and the problem is not fixed, they might make a small note of it. If they receive enough such calls/documentation/notes, then they might escalate the problem to higher levels of tech support with more important people (and the more calls/documented problems, the more people) checking out the problem.

In order to get Verizon TECH SUPPORT "to care" you need to do something like many people did with the volume problem. There are many, many droid and android forums on the internet. Join them, make relevant posts, organize reports of the problem with other people who have the problem, and get as many people as possible who have the problem to call it in properly to tech support. Many people kept doing this with the volume problem, and eventually enough people had documented the unresolved problem with Verizon tech support, and enough websites and even newspapers started reporting the problem, that Verizon and Motorola now (after weeks of denying any such problem) officially acknowledge the problem and claim (along with Motorola), that they are working on a firmware update that will fix or improve the problem.

My phone does the same thing that you describe, but only from my home in a very rural area with poor reception. In more populated areas with more cell towers (or whatever they are called), my voice calls are perfectly clear. At home, however, as soon as I dial, my number of bars drops to 0 or 1, and as soon as I hang up my number of bars goes up to 2, 3, or 4 (and, I think, a 3G indicator). So I presume that there is decent 3G/data coverage in the rual area where I live, but for whatever reason there is poor voice coverage where I live (and the voice quality at home is poor, in contrast to more populated areas, where it is excellent). Have you noticed whether the problem you describe changes depending on the area in which you are using the phone as I did?

Believe it, or not, and I didn't believe it at first either - the bars in the notification area are normally displaying EVDO (data) signal strength, except when you are actually making a call, when the display immediately switches over to reporting CDMA (voice) signal strength. The reported bars may take a big jump or drop, depending on the relative strength of the two signals.  Your Droid X is not defective, in fact.  I haven't been able to find any documentation on this, but you can validate it for yourself by installing an app called Real Signal, which will show both signals side-by-side for comparison with the regular display.

I went round-and-round on this issue for days, very frustrated with my "defective" Droid X, until a kindly forum participant enlightened me that there isn't a thing wrong with it, and I was able to validate it for myself.  Why Motorola and Verizon have done nothing to clarify this usage of the bars is beyond me.

Try going to Settings.Wireless and Network Settings/Mobile Networks/System Select and change setting to Home Only and see what happens.... I believe you are are between multiple towers and the signal is sweeping and this is causing the signal jumping...

@vic: I'm using Real Signal now and it looks like you're right. My Droid shows full network when actually I only have EVDO coverage. So when I try to place a call, the signal indicator switches to CDMA and shows me I have no network.
However having to rely on Real Signal clutters the status bar so this can only be a temporary solution.
And I can't believe Verizon agreed to a device that shows a wrong signal, not after the iphone 4 antennagate and not with their new communication campaign...

@dsxdroider: you re right I will call customer service so they can log the issue.
