4G LTE Signal goes white and data connection lost

In the last 3-4 weeks I've started to have problems with my Droid Bionic 4G LTE loosing data connectivity intermittently in the Minneapolis / St. Paul VerizonWireless area.  Has anyone else been experiencing this problem as well?  The connectivity is consistently hit and miss throughout the entire metro and suburbs areas.  4G LTE connection good for 5-10 mins with data connectivity (blue signal color on the 4G LTE) and then the 4G LTE turns from blue to white and the data connection is lost!  Any ideas what could be causing this problem.  I have a friend with the exact same problem, so I'm pretty confident that it is not the phone, but rather Verizon Wireless' network.  Note that the phone generally (98% of the time) retains the 4G LTE signal, but the "data" connectivity seems to "disconnect".  Over subscription issue on the backside of the VzW Network?

I upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 for the Droid Bionic (the leaked version).  I've not had single problem since.  I would highly recommend this if your still experiencing problems.  Of course, I'm not responsible for anyone who accidently "bricks" their phone.  However, this being said it is realatively easy to upgrade to the new leaked ICS 4.0.4.  And it is possible to roll back to Gingerbread 2.3.4 if you need to.  Check out videos on Youtube.com

I like it so far.   There are some things I don't care for, seems like smaller font size, etc.  But overall good.  The best part is that it fixes the trouble with the data connection that ALL Bionic users are experiencing across the country!  Ridiculous why VzW and Motorola didn't push ICS to the Bionic users first since they were up and running before RAZR users!  (Removed content to comply with VZW Community ToS).

Watch the forum mods they're pulling posts like these down left and right. I agree with you though, I updated mine to the leak and it works great.

Yes, Me as well... Since the.905 update first I noticed that my texting would fail the first time but go when I resent. Then a little later I realized that the 4G & network in general would fail... everything from games & app's lose internet connection to Google Play everything loses connection. This is BS!!!!! First there was a problem with the Bionic when it was the flagship model having issues with the 4G connectivity. then after several months it was fixed and working as advertised. AWESOME!!!

Now, after trying to push this crappy share everything plan which is utter trash, they break my phone again...  VERIZON Get your crap together. I've been a loyal customer for over 8 years. As of late I think I'd rather be a MetroPCS customer... and don't get me wrong they are crap too but at least I'm wouldn't be paying them almost $300/mo. for said crap...

Get the HINT... yes I'm very upset!!! Pissed actually

I just started having the same problem with my Bionic here in Chicago just a few days ago.  Never a problem before.  Does anyone have a solution for this?

Well, BigDirty1, I had this problem for a few months when I first got the Bionic which was the day it was released. This went on for about 3 months. Then an update came out and it was fixed. I for once loved my Bionic. A few weeks ago another update came out “The infamous .905. It screwed up my phone again. I accepted the update cuz I thought it was ice cream sandwich. Boy, was I wrong. Anyway I gave Verizon a few weeks to realize that the update they release d was broken and expected an immediate fix. Not only was it not fixed, they didn’t even acknowledge there was a problem. I went on forums to find hundreds of people complaining about this problem, yet tech support claimed no-one has heard anything… I can’t believe that the moderators of the forums don’t tell anyone about all the commotion going on in there that “hmm, there might be a problem that we need to address”. Anyway, you have a few options…

  1. If you are pretty technically oriented, you can Do a google search for “droid bionic 902 update download” ( There is approximately a 77% success rate on doing this.) NOTE: not for the lite hearted, it’s pretty technical.
  2. Complain vigorously with Verizon, After doing so they offered me a replacement phone, Droid Razor, Samsung  Galaxy Nexus, or Droid charge.

I hope this helps…

I just got off the phone with tech support, and they told me that Motorola is aware of the problem with the Bionic losing data connection in 4G LTE and they are working on it. But as of now they have no ETA on a fix. They then offered me the Droid Razor as a replacement phone without me even asking. If it wasn't for the guy I talked to on the phone today and the steps he took for me, Verizon would've lost a customer today.

Is the Razr a worthy replacement for the Bionic?

I have been having the same issue for over a month now with my Bionic. My co-worker also has the same issues with her Bionic, and her husband has the Thunderbolt, same issue. I've tried all the different settings, switching Airplane mode on/off, etc. with no luck. I called tech support and they did what is called a "switch profile". My phone worked perfect for 24 hours. During that 24hrs not once did my phone lose connection. So fast, and every online app was lightning speed. But then the following day, connection issues started happening again. I called tech support again and they couldn't do anything but suggest going to a Verizon store and getting a new SIM card. If that didn't work, then they would offer a new phone or equivalent.

My coworker went to Verizon store over the weekend and got a new SIM card but that didn't work at all. So Verizon is sending out a new phone. Reading other comments here doesn't sound like that will work, seems a lot of people from various areas are having the same issue with different phones.

How come they were able to do this "switch profile" and my connection worked perfectly for a short time? That should tell you it's not the phone, but somethings to do with Verizon 4G. I have switched to CDMA only (3G) and for now it seems to be working, but 3G is not 4G. Wonder if doing the tweek to ICS is the way to go?

Update. So I went into a Verizon store and how a long discussion with the rep. In summary she explained that is the manufacturer's fault and that Verizon towers are just fine. So let me see if I got this straight, various manufacturers with various phones all have the same related problem, 4G data connectivity issues with Verizon. It seems to me that Verizon has done something to their 4G network and now expect the manufacturers to come up with new software so that it's compatible with the changes Verizon has made to their network. It sounds to me that Verizon 4G will no longer support previous software such as Gingerbread 2.3.4 and that Ice Cream Sandwich, once it is installed on all these phones, will be the solution. Is there a release date, no. What to do in the meantime?

For now, Verizon is sending me a new (refurbished) Bionic. My co-worker, who is having the same exact issue with her Bionic and her husband's Thunderbolt, just got their replacement phones yesterday, and guess what, problem still exists. Even worse, ordering these refurbished phones creates even more headache. You have to redonwload all those apps, but since 4G doesn't work, then how you can download the apps?

The problem is not the phone, it's Verizon. And they know it. If you call and B1tch they will do the standard run around, send you to a tech, get a new SIM card,  tell you to reboot, go to airplane mode, offer a refurbished unit of a phone no longer being sold, etc, etc.

Verizon throttles the data on everybody's phone once it goes past a predetermined data limit. Those of us that still have the unlimited plan get phucked the worst. My data essentially stops when I hit 2GB. Guaranteed. Like clockwork. Period.

It's not the manufacturers fault (99% of the time). This is a verizon problem that is built into the (bionic) phone.

For one thing, TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM -ACROSS THE BOARD- WITH THE FULL COMPLEMENT OF ANDROID PHONES!!  they want you to get frustrated to the point where you will pay for more data.

I was having the same problem. But I think I might have found the answer maybe to some of the problems. I had a hard case for my phone and i noticed that if i take the case off, my 4g lte signal is fine. But once the case is on the phone, I have problems getting the data connection to connect. I might be speaking kind of early, as I just noticed this, but it might solve a few problems.

Taking the hard case off is working for me so far. Actually it was a soft case but removing it has worked.  no drops yet

Also go into settings to Date and Time.  If "Automatic" box is checked, uncheck it.  I did this and it's working even with the case on.  Obviously repower after unchecking box.  Still going strong with no white bars.

I am also a very disappointed Verizon Wireless Droid Bionic user. This item was great when I got it last November until about 4-8 weeks ago--I believe with the 5.9.905 update, then it was crap. Constant 4G internet connection issues. Sometimes works for hours, then can barely get 5 minutes working.

I've also been through sim card replacement, and a replacement phone. There are actually two bionics in my household--both have the same issue, and both have been replaced. No change in status. I've been with Verizon for many years, but am seriously disappointed in them. Their next step was to send me a different phone. I don't want a different phone--I've accessories and batteries for this phone!
