Check to make sure that in volume you do not have "use increasing volume" checked. If you do, uncheck it. If it is checked, it takes a while before you can hear anything.

Just another suggestion - lay your Droid X screen side down. The speaker is on the bottom, and if you lay it screen side up, the sound is muted. I had this issue too, but once i realized where the speaker was, and laid my phone screen side down the alarm volume was much louder.

This helps me as well, I always lay the phone screen side down when I need to use the alarm to wake up. It's actually very annoying that the speaker is where it is. If my phone's screen side up laying on anything, I can't hear alert tones or calls. Very annoying.

Just make sure that you do NOT have Smart Sensors check or else all you will get is the vibration.
