I just bought my Droid X less than 30 days ago. Verizon is launching a new 4G network. These phones are not upgradable to get on the 4g network. If you are one of the 110 million people that live in the test markets where the 4g network will be available you should wait before you buy a new phone.

This is correct, from information I have recieved that it will be official before LTE will be large enough to benifit anyone for waiting, akso there wont be any quality LTE support devices hitting until then as well so waiting makes no since at this time.

You're right, VZW is rumored to unveil it's new 4G lineup during the consumer electronics show in January. They are hoping for a Mid to late Feb release of their handset. If it's been anything like the previous phone release delays, I'd imagine they are a bit to optimistic when they say 1st Qtr 2011. Realistically I'd say Mid March is probably a better time-line.

When I got my phone, the guy at the store said that the Droid X would be upgradeable. Guess, he might be wrong, huh?
Secondly, when 4G comes out, will it be immediately nationwide, or will it be rolled out in areas? I'm in a small city and we tend to be near the last to get anything new and improved.

It will be on a rollout plan. Currently they have released in 21 cities if memory serves me correctly. As for the Droid X being upgradeable... It's unclear if the Droid X will operate on 4G, it's not compatible with the LTE plan of VZW, but that's simply because VZW requires all LTE devices to be Global.
One thing that is commonly confused 4G doesn't = LTE. LTE is Verizon's business plan for Long Term Expansion, it has more to do with the fact that they will be doing both CDMA and GSM signal coverage.
Only time will tell if the radio is upgradeable.

Good point but information that I have ran across seem to speak of LTE and 4G being introduced to the market on a similar scheldule. But it wouldnt be the first time information changed. To be honest the naming games that the carriers are going through makes things a little confusing at times. 4G, Wimax, LTE, 3G, Edge.....

Yes, the 4G & LTE will rollout at the same time, with expected nationwide coverage by 2013. LTE is Verizon's commitment to Long Term Expansion. One day 5G or whatever the next series is called will fall under the LTE program as well. They are also adding GSM radio service to their CDMA towers under this LTE program.
As you said it's just a name game. Verizon want's to set it's network apart from others, when it's all said and done, it's the same cookie with a different wrapper.

You do understand that the 4G test networks are only working with the data connection cards right? I'd like to see how you plan on making calls and sending txts on a data card. Right now VZW hasn't even released info on what phones will be 4G other than to say 1st Qtr 2011.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
