Android 2.1 has not come out.

You will find anger all over the web because Motorola announced that the Android 2.1 update would be pushed over the air to Verizon Droids on Feb 22, 2010, but Motorola missed the date and didn't provide any information or response to customers asking for info about when the update would come.  Moto eventually announced that Android 2.1 would come out "soon."  2.1 has come to this phone in other countries, so it's Verizon that's holding up the show.  Verizon said it would push the 2.1 update on March 23 by releasing it to some testers then rolling it out in huge batches.  Verizon not only missed that date, but denied it had ever claimed it would push the update out in mass.  VZW is known to be a control-freak organization.  It only allowed Motorola Droid to have unlocked capabilities like GPS because VZW was getting clobbered in the smart phone market by iPhone.  The geniuses at VZW also declined to accept iPhone on Apple's terms without crippling every iPhone feature that makes the iPhone so successful.

Verizon store reps are not any more privy to info that what's available on blogs.  The reps have many phones, operating systems and software updates to continue with.  Android is not the only game in town so it's not reasonable to expect VZW reps to know anything about when the Droid is getting 2.1.  The Droid already received an upgrade from 2.0 to 2.0.1; some reps mistakenly think the 2.0.1 upgrade is the one you're talking about when you ask about 2.1.  From reading blogs, it seems some reps give wrong answers instead of simply and honestly telling you they don't know.

You know what the difference is between a used car salesman and a computer repair person right?

The used car salesman knows he's lying... :smileyhappy:

I spent most of all day yesterday on the phone and waiting for return phone calls from Verizon.  I will have to admit that they did answer all of my questions.

The 2.1 is out for the Moto Droid.  It is being put out in 25,000 groups.  From what I understand.  He might have said 250,000, I am not sure.  I would assume the older customers are going to be upgraded first.

Now for the bad news.  Us Eris users.  HTC told this rep that the 2.1 would be available no later than the end of April.  It should be sooner, but they couldn't promise that.  How it will be sent out, they are not sure yet.  They are sure it will be sent out in "blocks" but nothing on how many at a time yet.

For those waiting for the Incredible.  HTC is still testing it.  They have till June to finish the testing and promote the phone.  Verizon has not accepted the phone yet and not sure they even will take it.  Depends on the results of the testing.

They have no plans even if they do accept it to offer it as an upgrade as of now.  So... the Eris users are the ones that get the shaft this time if Verizon does pick up the Incredible.

2.1 arrived this morning from out of the blue...  Awoke and they phone said... you have a system update would you like to install???  (Continue)  (Not Now) (Never) if memory serves me...   About phone screen firmware version now says "2.1-update 1"  Been playing for half hour or so and noticed performance improvement (not that performance was bad)   Will play with other features and report back...

Some joker over on the HTC forum is bragging about how he purchased his Droid Eris from a Verizon store up in New York with 2.1 already installed. Since I haven't seen word one fro anyone else having this experience...I'm going to call that claim false.

At the very most he could be "lucky" and picked up a refurbished one that someone else had installed 2.1 before returning it.

What I want to see and know is what the release version of 2.1 w/ Sense UI will feature. Don't get me wrong, Navigator is nice, but outside of the home screen pinch trick, I see nothing in the leaked (unrooted) Eris 2.1 roms that does anything outside of what the Moto Droid could already do with the stock os it shipped with.

Anyone? Know or seen something that this 2.1 upgrade will come out with that just blows the socks off any previous OS (1.5 Sense UI or Droid's 2.0.1)?
