I still have not received my Froyo update.  I talked to a Motorola representitve and she said that they did not know the date of when the updates where going to be finished.  i am thinking of just manually updating my phone.  Will it void my warranty?  Should I just wait?

I think you should just wait yes.

The 2.2 update is being released to all customers. The roll out began on August 3 and will end on Aug 18th. They are randomly being sent so you should receive yours momentarily.

Is manually updating the same as the OTA update? Will it update OTA after the manual install as well when it FINALLY makes it to my phone... if it even does?

I'm comfortable doing it myself and would like to test if I got a bad phone or not, as they said Froyo may clear up some of my issues...

Maybe it's really busted and won't update. Ugh. Was considering rooting anyway. My friend did it and he was able to actually set things up the way he really wanted and they didn't set themselves back to settings of which he selected otherwise.

If you've manually updated you wont get the OTA update, because there's nothing to update. When the OTA update states the first thing checked is your current version. Since your version matches the OTA version it simply skips you.
