Android Updates

I have had many issues with Android updates recently. Is it possible to disable these entirely? One of the issues involved Amazon MP3 being placed in my dock area. I was not sure of how to remove it at first, and it overwrote my contacts shortcut. This normally wouldn't be a huge issue, but I was at a trade show, and time was short for everything, and trying to figure out what the updates had done to my phone and how to go around them was not in the plan.

Another update that was done, involved Google Books. I found no way to uninstall it, and before I could figure out how to stop it from downloading, it had downloaded 3 books to my phone. This not only used up a lot of battery, but also a lot of space on my phone, and made it very slow to do anything else.

Is there anyway to prevernt these updates from installing?
