Assigning Contacts to Groups?

I have created Groups and I am trying to assign contacts to the individual groups with no luck.  When I long press on a contact, the menu that comes up does not show "Add to Group". If I long press on the contact "#BAL", the menu does show "Add to Group:".

A more elegant way would be to create the groups and add contacts to them in the application that is synced to the phone through your Accounts.  For example, I use Google Apps for my practice, and so I have Google Contacts, which syncs to the phone through my Google Account settings in the phone (you appear to have a Google Account set up as well).  Simply create the groups you want in Google Contacts, and they will be imported into the phone when you sync it.  You can see these groups by going to Contacts/Groups and then scrolling down to you Google Account - all the groups you created in Google Contacts should be there.

Adding to what was stated and as a suggestion to Almostthere03, I am providing steps below that can assist you with adding a contact to a group. You can also add a contact to a group when you create the contact. As a reference, these steps can also be found on page 48 of the user manuel that can be accessed via this link

Adding Contacts to a Group

1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts > Groups.

2. Touch a Group to display it, then touch Add member.

3. Touch contact(s) to mark them for addition, or touch Select all to mark all contacts. When selected, a check mark appears in the check box.

4. Touch Add to add the selected contact(s).

I add contacts to groups by choosing to edit the contact, then scroll down to Groups (below IM), tap that and choose the group(s) for that contact.

(When I tapped Contacts, then Groups at the top of the screen, I saw something about Google Groups.  I don't know anything about that.)

This is a real guess, but it may be that only contacts that are "in your phone" can be added to groups.  Most of the contacts I have on my Charge come from other accounts (Google and Facebook).  Only 5 contacts are actually "in the phone".  When I use backup assistant, these are the only five that get backed up.  When I try to assign a Google contact to a group, there is no entry for that on the edit screen.  Perhaps the logic is that you ALREADY have the contact in a group - the Google group.

I believe you are right.  They ALL have the letter "g" within the contact info.  I just received my Charge yesterday and the customer service rep downloaded my contacts through Verizon's Backup Assistant.

On my LG Touch (no smart remarks), I kept my contacts in groups. Is there any way I can get them into Groups?

Thanks

Probably good guesses.  I can't test them because I don't have any contacts on Google and don't even have a real Facebook account.

When I am on the Groups tab, all groups displaying show counts (all 0 for Google groups).  If I tap a Phone group, I see the phone contacts in that group.  I can also add or delete phone contacts for that group.  That would probably be the fastest way to set up group membership from scratch.  I can't tell whether I could add Google contacts to a Phone group.  It would be a neat feature, but probably not implemented.

By the way, does anyone have a way to do a FULL backup of phone contacts?  The backup assistant is incomplete.  Among other things, it does not back up group membership -- at least group membership is not shown online, though I can create groups online.  They just don't contain the membership that is shown on the phone.

The contacts are already in my phone.  The only thing that is synced to them is through Backup Assistant.  BA will restore the basic contact info if I lose it, just doesn't give me groups.  I can add the group info reasonably, but not really quickly because of the sheer number of contacts.

The primary (only?) reason I have a gmail account is because the phone requires it.  It was set up when I bought the Charge.  Since I haven't found a fully satisfactory email app for the Charge, I do use the gmail account as my "save" location for the phone.  Clunky, but my primary email processing is on my computer so I don't save on the phone often.

(I wouldn't want to sync my email contact info from my computer to the phone.  It's encrypted on the computer for a reason.)

Out of curiosity, how did you get all those contacts "in the phone"?  Did you enter them manually, or were they imported somehow?

Thanks!

As far as I recall, all entered directly into A phone.  This was done over a period of 10+ years into several different phones used over that time.  That only averages 20 or so contacts per year.  My email list is much larger (2000+) and doesn't totally overlap.  If I transferred email list to phone, I'd have to delete a lot.

Incidentally and addressed mainly to the moderators, I received two notices of your reply.  One worked correctly while the other sent me to a signin page which didn't accept my signin info and sent me to an "Access Denied" page.  ??

Right, got it.  But when you bought the Charge, how did you get the 200 or so contacts into the phone from your last phone?  Did you have Verizon do it, or did you do it yourself with the help of software and a computer, or did you put all of them in manually (ugh!)?
