I had Verizon do the transfer to the Charge (from a Blackberry).  I'm not sure whether they used Backup Assistant or what.  (Had I done it myself, I would have used BA, which did as good as job as they did -- meaning I had to redo a few things.)

Actually, BA is one of the things that Verizon does pretty well.  I'll bet it's saved a lot of people.  I have heard AT&T customers who lost quite a bit and would have been happier to have an equivalent facility.  Of course it's also saved Verizon a lot of grief, like the time they fried an LG phone of mine when trying to update software.  They gave me a new phone, but still would have had some problems with me except that I had made sure to have a new backup before I handed the phone to them.

Thanks for clarifying that.  Almost all of my contacts are in Google Apps (some in Facebook, but mostly personal, not business), so I am already backed up.  I don't use BA because I have very few contacts "in the phone".

Well, there is the brute force method of adding your contacts manually to the phone, starting with the Contacts icon, then selecting the "+" sign next to the search box.  Not too user-friendly.

A more elegant way would be to create the groups and add contacts to them in the application that is synced to the phone through your Accounts.  For example, I use Google Apps for my practice, and so I have Google Contacts, which syncs to the phone through my Google Account settings in the phone (you appear to have a Google Account set up as well).  Simply create the groups you want in Google Contacts, and they will be imported into the phone when you sync it.  You can see these groups by going to Contacts/Groups and then scrolling down to you Google Account - all the groups you created in Google Contacts should be there.

Adding to what was stated and as a suggestion to Almostthere03, I am providing steps below that can assist you with adding a contact to a group. You can also add a contact to a group when you create the contact. As a reference, these steps can also be found on page 48 of the user manuel that can be accessed via this link

Adding Contacts to a Group

1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts > Groups.

2. Touch a Group to display it, then touch Add member.

3. Touch contact(s) to mark them for addition, or touch Select all to mark all contacts. When selected, a check mark appears in the check box.

4. Touch Add to add the selected contact(s).
