At my wit's end!

I've been experiencing a number of problems with my phone, which I've had since May.  The problems are only recent though.  It was wonderful before!

The first thing that happened involved just the Amazon app store.  It got to a point where an app would download fine, but would just hang during the installation part.  A phone reboot solved the problem for a short time, but eventually it started to happen again and rebooting didn't help.

One night, my phone started showing little pop up messages about things I wasn't even doing.  "Long press disabled in such and such mode" or "quick reply message sent".  I turned off my phone and pulled the battery, but it didn't seem to fix either problem.  The next morning, thinking maybe I hadn't left the battery out long enough, I pulled it again, as well as the SD card.  Put everything back, started up the phone, and no luck.  In fact, now it won't read the SD card.  I think it is reading it because it shows how much capacity it has and how much is left, but none of my apps that are stored on the card are accessible.  I stuck the SD card into a computer and it seemed to see all the files just fine, so I don't think I killed the card in the process of pulling it.

The next thing I tried was a factory reset, which did exactly nothing.  Well, I take that back.  I don't seem to be getting those random pop up messages anymore.  However, I can't get some apps to download or install.  The Amazon app store app will not install.  It has the same hanging problem as apps from that store had before.  I've been trying to download the Facebook app from the Android Marketplace, along with some other apps.  The install button just greys out and nothing ever happens.  There is no indication of any downloading happening.

The final thing is that I'm still on 2.2.1 and cannot get my phone to update.  I select "check new" in Settings, and it pops up a little window saying it's checking, but after a few seconds, the window disappears and nothing ever happens.

I'm not sure if anyone is going to read or respond to my plea, but just in case, I thought I'd better update.  I went into our local Verizon store today and explained my problems.  I was nervous to do so because I didn't purchase my phone there and didn't know if they'd refuse to help based on that fact.  The local store of a competing carrier will not help you if your phone wasn't purchased in their store.

What I found out was that my method for pulling the battery was wrong.  I didn't realize the phone needed to be turned on when you did that.  I did it the correct way and now most of my problems are gone.  The one problem it is still having is not being able to update from 2.2.1
