I have checked the box in apps through the Market for automatic updates. Is there something else that I need to that they update on their own. So far I have had to manually update the same apps more than once.

Unfortunately the only option is to check the setting through the apps market for automatic updates.
Hope this helps!

Open your market app from time to time.
The OS will close the program when not in use. When you do get a notification you will get the auto updates.
It is not a perfect system, but atleast it controls your battery.

For whatever reason, my Market Update Notifications rarely work. I almost never see the update icon in my taskbar. I have to open the Market manually and go to Downloads to see if anything has changed.
Clearing the cache has helped whenever I see sluggish behavior but the notifications still won't show... (shrug)
