Just started with Droid 2 over the weekend.  Battery life if awful.  What apps do I absolutely need at start up?  I downloaded Task Killer and Advanced Battery Improvement.  What items should I should I turn off?

Thanks for the input everyone. I listed some information regarding battery life on your Droid 2 and how to extend the life of your battery.

Battery Basics

  • Do not use a battery that has not been approved by the manufacturer, as this may damage the phone and / or battery.
  • Battery life depends on the network, signal strength, temperature, features, and accessories used.

Tips for extending battery life

  • Turn off any services (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) that are not being used.
  • Avoid exposing the battery to extreme heat and cold.
  • For the first 3 charge cycles, fully charge the battery overnight and allow it to fully discharge before recharging (battery conditioning).
  • Charge and re-condition a battery after an extended idle period.
  • A lithium-ion battery may be damaged by extensive overcharging (continuously on a charger for more than 24 hours).
  • Keep your phone, batteries, and the contact terminals clean.
  • Use the battery. If possible, avoid letting your battery sit idle for long periods of time.
  • Use only the phone options and accessories that you really need.

Additional batteries and extended batteries can be purchased from any Verizon Wireless retail store or online store.

Additionally, the task killer application provides a way to view which applications are currently running in the background on your phone then closes any of them with the tap of a button.  Your android applications and programs might periodically run in the background, depleting your battery.  The Advanced Task Killer application is Free and can be helpful but not necessary.

get rid of task killer first, it drains the battery

what widgets are you running? i found that any widget that updates alot can get stuck and kill the battery fast

If you have email, weather, social networking, etc, updating too frequently your battery will drain faster.

As mentioned if you're in an area where you get 1X more than 3G it will kill your battery.

Automatic task killers are not good for battery life. The OS restarts programs, if you have a task killer set to kill them, then the task killer is always working.

What had been said covers it pretty well. I just would like to say that with any smartphone, battery life is not the best, in fact, I might say horrible. However, considering what your smartphone can do, it's no wonder that the batter will drain relatively quickly. I might also add, shut your wifi and bluetooth off when you are not using them. They too are battery drainers.
